This is the worklog of my entree in the Enermax Crazy Twister competition. A quit simple assignment; make something crazy with an Enermax fan. Well, I decided to give my PC some extra airflow from the top of the case and make it look like a stealth plane :)
First I made some designes in SketchUp, using the geometry of the Enermax Magma 120mm [UCMA12] and the Enermax Cluster 80mm [UCCL8].

Here are the two "victims", who were provided by my good friends from Space Promotion. (http://www.spacepromotion.nl/)

This is the position I want them to stand.

For body I use my favorite material called Vikureen, also know as polystyreen.
It's so easy to use, just measure; make a shallow cut....
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_10.jpg
..and the cut follows the lines perfectly.

Thanx man.
The top of the microtower is 370 x 180 mm (14.5" x 7"), so thats the size of the mod.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_14.jpg
The size of the fans dictated the cuts I made here.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_15.jpg
Here you can see the SketchUp drawing and the mod in front of it.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_12.jpg
I cut a larger hole in the top, to let the air in.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_13.jpg
The smaller fan will provide an exhaust airflow.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_16.jpg
For that reason I cut holes in front of the small fan and underneath the large one.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_17.jpg
Wow! These fan are very easy to disassemble! What a great idea from Enermax !
I found it was very easy also to get the fans painted.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_18.jpg
I painted them metallic silver.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_19.jpg
After assembly I stuck the Enermax decall back on to it.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_20.jpg
More Frenkie art? Hell yes! Love the idea. Watching :)

This is the large fan now, looks good !
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_21.jpg
And with just 7 Volt, it spins like a cat and looks very posh :)
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_22.jpg
The angle of the fan is fixed, so this piece will make that solid.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_23.jpg
After the construction-glue was cured, I can slide it in very easy.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_24.jpg
And there it is.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_25.jpg
Sideview.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_26.jpg
The fan on the back sucks hot air from the case, so it gets a duct.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_27.jpg
Other side, with more polystyreen added.

Frenkie, this is SUPER exciting for me to see, and its opened up a whole new world of questions that I want to ask you. I know hovercrafts, especially recreational and racing hovercraft, are huge across the pond, so what is your inspiration for the hovercraft case design?
I've actually built multiple hovercraft, and raced in the National Hoverally in the US, so if you are new to hovercraft and need another source or anything I'm here for ya. Again, its super cool you are doing a hovercraft inspired case, and I'm jealous I couldn't get to the idea before you. The TBCS post I made is here (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16714).

It looks soo cool. The building with your friends is awesome. The driving reminds me of Ken Block :D :D :D I really love the different designs. If I were your neighbour, I would be totaly hooked on this hobby!
About my little fiddling; I was planning to make a hovercraft-like vehicle from the enermax fan, but getting the skirt and let alone getting it to hoover, posed a too great problem to overcome in such a short time. So about 3/4 of the project I changed my plan to a stealth plane. Watch this thread, you wont be disappointed.

Now a tricky part, a rudder ! The Vikureen is just 2 mm thick.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_29.jpg
Added a tiny little hinge.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_30.jpg
And here is the connecting piece.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_31.jpg
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_32.jpg
The main hinges I made from simple ear-swap sticks.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_33.jpg
With glue, curing for a while.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_34.jpg
This is how it should function.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_35.jpg
Straight....
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_36.jpg
...to the left...
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_37.jpg
..and to the right. It works !
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_38.jpg
Oops. I forgot to spraypaint the back, quickly corrected.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_39.jpg
And now with mounted rudder.

Lights please !
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_41.jpg
Oooh shiny logo ! ;)
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_42.jpg
I spraypainted the rear of the duct in dull black, to get a little more contrast.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_43.jpg
These will form the air intakes of the stealthplane.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_44.jpg
Had some ACRyan mesh left, very nice material to cover the intakes.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_45.jpg
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_46.jpg
Hmmm, that cable sticks out too far, I better get it inside.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_47.jpg
There, thats much better.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_48.jpg
For finishing I used a technique called "kit-bashing". From redundant plastic scale models ( planes, cars and boats ) I use small parts to add more detail to the mod.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_49.jpg
Some can be very tiny :)

3 cheers for kitbashing!! I've already got a whole lotta pieces set aside for my sandcrawler, both from old models that I was going to toss, and extra parts from unbuilt kits (plus some from a few kits I decided I didn't care about enough to not use for the sandcrawler :D ) looking forward to seeing where you go with this (I especially like the moving fins you made for the fan, very cool!)

With filler I filled the largest cracks.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_51.jpg
More details added, I think it will look very nice when its done.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_52.jpg
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_53.jpg
This hinge part was damaged...
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_54.jpg
So I better stick something over it, to conceal it ;)
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_55.jpg
More detail added.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_56.jpg
Just use my imagination to stick it on.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_57.jpg
Fastened the wings, ready to paint.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frenkie/hovermax/Hovermax_58.jpg
Primer coats.

Just got the link to the webpage where you can see all contestants. A bit disappointed there are only 7 participants. Some are really very ingeniously, but also some are...... ahwell.
Take a look for yourself and vote for who you think deserves it. Thanx again for your attention !

Hamburg, 23rd November 2009.
A racing car with"Air cooling by Enermax“ is the winner of the Crazy Twister Contest. The Formula Student team of Technical University in Dresden equipped its new racing car with two high-resistant Magma fans, which are specially designed for extreme temperature conditions (up to 85°C). The fans blow cool air into the engine bay and dissipate the heat. Enermax awards the best fan application with 1.000 Euro for a shopping tour at German online store Alternate.de.
2nd and 3rd Place: Hovercraft and Sound Controlled LED Fan
Second place took Dutch modding enthusiast “Frenkie”. He created the “Hovermax”, an outstanding fan mod: The “Hovermax” is a model of a hovercraft equipped with one 8cm Cluster and one 12cm Magma fan. In international Enermax forum “Frenkie” presents the worklog of his “Hovermax”. Third place goes to “Samhain” from Poland. His sound-controlled Cluster fan was the jury’s favourite entry, but came in users’ voting only in third place. Nevertheless, many users will probably follow the creative concept behind this project.
The Overall Results of the Enermax Crazy Twister Contest
EF Seppel (Germany): First Use of Enermax Fan in Formula Student Race Car 90 points
Frenkie (Netherlands): Hovermax 71 points
Samhain (Poland): Sound Controlled Colorofon Fan 63 points
