Software, not hardware.

For those of you looking into creating a game or anything like that, Unreal has released its devkit for free.

There's a few things in the licensing for if you want to release a commercial game but seems reasonable. 99$ on release, then anything you make up to 5k is yours, and after that they get 25%.

That's a pretty decent business model actually.. The tools are free unless you want to make money with them, then it's a flat rate until you hit a certain point.

I wonder if you were to make $5100... would they only charge 25% of the $100, or 25% of the total...

Pretty sure it would be 25% of 100$. They have a few examples on the licensing page that are similar situations to that, and the 25% only occurs for money gained after first 5k.

That looks cool. I wonder how much programming you need to know to be able to do anything. I remember the old UT kits being pretty tough.

I saw this on hackaday last night; I'm gonna grab it tonight once I get home and try it out. I probably won't do much with it, but it'll be interesting :P

..hmm...on the other hand, I have been wanting to make a 3D network traffic visualizer...I might try that with this

I too saw this on hackaday last night. I sent a few pms about it to the game designers we have here. I am going to download it tomorrow and play around with it some. I used to use the included map designer a little bit in the original UT.

Ya, I figured a couple people here would find it useful, if not maybe a bit out of one persons grasp to do much with.

I've coded a few simple games with java and a couple with c# but my issue is always the graphics stuff. I'm no modeler or pc artist so though my work runs well, it looks like ass. So I probably won't get very far with UE3, but worth looking into anyway.

ALSO, for those who do not know about this already, http://www.idsoftware.com/business/techdownloads/. There you can get the source code for Quake 3 Arena, Quake 2, and Quake 1 all free to use under GPL. A different beast entirely to UE3, but something those who might be interested in UE3 may be interested in as well.

Hmm, I'm not into game design but I might mess around with this. Wonder if I can pull off a basic RTS game from the engine.
