Ordered the parts, followed this guide (http://www.rapidrepair.com/guides/ipodtouch2g/ipodtouch2grepairguide.html), turned it on... and it works! Just one problem...
I forgot the mid-frame! Ahh! There is always something that I forget.
Now for those of you who don't know, the mid-frame is what basically holds it all together. It also contains the gasket which makes it water-resistant, but you have to scrape that away to do anything so... maybe I'll just replace that with wax once I get the chance. Maybe. But anyways, the mid-frame also contains the single button located on the face of the Touch and that's kind of a pretty important piece! So I tried cannibalizing the mid-frame which just resulted in me breaking it. It's stuck to the glass screen with this super insanely sticky substance so its near impossible to get out. Fortunately and unfortunately, I figured out that I could probably slip a super thin piece of flimsy metal in between and pry the piece that I need off the back of the glass. It's unfortunate because if I would have thought of this earlier instead of just trying to pry it off with my fingers, I would have had a perfect mid-frame. Oh well. So I got the piece that holds the button in place and what-not and using the remaining sticky residue I applied it to the new glass screen. Turned it on... working perfectly! Tried the button... not so much. Pressed down a bit more and it worked. So basically, since it doesn't have the full mid-frame, it's all just kind of loosely sitting in there and isn't making full contact with the... well, contacts. Luckily I have my iPod Touch case, which at least holds it all in place at any angle but still doesn't fix the problem of A) if it gets wet I'm doomed and I can't apply the wax because of B) the button still only works if I press down hard enough to make contact with the contacts, which means I need to buy the mid-frame sometime down the road, which means that I can't apply the wax until then as I can only imagine that it'll be a pain to remove. Not that I could if I wanted to anyways, since it's kind of loose and bulging out a bit without the mid-frame.
So close! Now I just need that mid-frame. Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't sell any and I'm not sure if I trust any of the "iPod Parts" stores. There is Ebay, but I'm not sure if I want to take the chance on trying to salvage one as it's a pain to remove and breaks pretty easily. I'm also now jobless. So... hmm....
At least it works for now. I just have to be super careful with it and never take it out of its case or get it even remotely wet.
Oh yea, one more thing, for anyone who is wondering how difficult it is to take one of these apart without causing any damage and then putting it back together again.... it's pretty damn difficult and stressful. If you don't have a steady hand or a lot of patience, don't even attempt it. It's definitely not quick or easy, a lot can go wrong and easily.
Edit: ugh! This is the same amount that I paid for both the glass and the screen! T_T
