Ok so if I decided to install an LCD showing pics or desktop what model should I use, and how would I insatll it drivers etc. If possible could I get links to hardware which would allow me to control lighting in my room?

X10 modules are probably the most available and easily installed home automation products. They also make a unit called a FireCracker that allows you to hook it up to a serial port on your computer and control the devices.

Their main site is http://www.x10.com/home.html but there are alot of companies that use the same technology. Ebay may be a good source to find modules at a better price.

On a side note I posted some information on this thread (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1115&highlight=lava) that you may find interesting. Also check out episode 2 of hak5, there are links in that thread..

Good luck and enjoy..
