Just read this in the news paper. A local woman is suing the school district because her son was injured in a fight that he started. Her son (white) called another student (black) the N word. Then the black student said something back and the white student attacked him by stabbing him in the thigh with a pen and proceeding to punch the black kid in the face several time. When the black kid finally got a hit in he actually fractured the white kids jaw. So the mother of the white kid is suing the school district for not protecting her son even though the fight was investigated and ruled her sons fault.
Its not but 7 years ago that I graduated highschool and even back then if 2 people got in a fight only one was charged with anything if it was proven that he was at fault or the other was clearly defending himself. If you let your mouth / fist write a check your ass couldn't cash then you got your ass beat and possibly in legal trouble but no one ever sued anyone. Fighting was part of growing up.
The article also mentioned that last year a woman sued the same school district for her kid tripping over a curb in the parking lot and breaking her wrist. It didn't mention the outcome of the case though.

And here I was expecting to read about another ridiculous hate-crime charge, but this is even worse. Going after the school district for something like this is laughable.
If she wins somehow (or there's a settlement), I hope she uses the proceeds to get her son - and herself - some counseling.

This is going to be a really inflammatory comment, so please don't let things get out of hand; this is how a lot of people outside of America see American culture. It's not true, but stories of small-minded people like this seem to circulate like wildfire and lead to the perception that Americans refuse to take responsibility for their own actions.
When you add on things like the girl who sued McDonalds, not to mention the big news items like the war in Iraq, it leads to a perception of Americans as an ignorant, arrogant people who believe they can do no wrong and blame everyone else for their problems.
Every country has people like this, but when it happens in America it becomes an anecdotal story about how strange America is, like it's a representation of America as a whole. It's no more true in the US than it is in any other country; but when it happens in the US, people sit up and say "Ho, those silly Americans, look at what they're up to now".
I don't know why so many people have a "Love to Hate" relationship with the US (including many of the Americans I know). I do know that stories like this give the US a bad name; people don't think "What a silly woman" they think "What a typical American".
I'm curious to see how you'll respond to my comments, but try to keep it clean, and remember I'm not bashing anyone here. Apart from the stupid b*tch that's suing the education system, she's a crackpot and deserves every bit of derision that's thrown her way.

Sadly Dave, this is too true in the US today. Our society has raised a generation (or more) that are blameless in any actions they take. I work with 2 of these type of people and despise them.
Here is another example;
A young girl just out of high school, jumps in the mustang her parents gave her for graduation and goes for a ride in the mountains (where she lives) on a wet rainy day. She is going over the speed limit, loses control of her car, hits a cal trans worker (CALifornia TRANSportation department) head on and then crashes down the embankment about 60' (if she would not have hit a redwood, she would have went another 200'). She is now injured quite badly and will never quite walk on her own. On her family's blog, the mother indicates that it was a horrible tragedy where no one was at fault (are you kidding me?). The family is suing the county for the road conditions, the CalTrans worker for being there and the State for allowing the accident to happen! The Highway Patrol investigated and found that it was totally her fault for speeding on a wet mountain road...
We see too many of these sorts of things where people refuse to accept responsibility for their own actions.
A young girl [...] mountain road...

Cases like this are the reason I wish I could afford to go to school to be a lawer then someday be a judge. I see so much of this in the news. With the whole school thing that would be dismissed and the mother who was suing would be paying all the fees for the school and the medical bills for the other kid. A whole bunch of those I would be like 2 seconds over the case, dismissed and get out of my court room and here's a fine for wasting my time, and everybody elses.

It's not true, but stories of small-minded people like this seem to circulate like wildfire and lead to the perception that Americans refuse to take responsibility for their own actions.Who told you it wasn't true? Did you just give us the benefit of the doubt and assume 'nobody can be that stupid...'? As an American I can tell you firsthand that what you said is completely true of the majority of the US population. The American dream has changed over the the last 30 or so years to become "To get rich quick at anothers' expense and then party wildly until the binge-drinking finally causes death."
I personally blame what Hollywood/TV has become for most of it...laziness for the rest. Stupider movies each year and dumbed-down reality TV effects on the population have finally been realized. Instead of learning something new, most of my friends from school preferred to watch the newest Scary Movie or Who Wants to Marry a Gorilla!? or Laugh At The Preposterous Contrasts Between My Hollywood Culture vs. These Farmer's Culture And Listen To Me Whine And Complain Like The Spoiled Bitch I Am. I have purposely lost contact with all but 1 of them. He was the only one that hated those shows as well and actually had an idea once in a while. I'm not anti-Hollywood by a longshot...I would just hate them less if all ****ty movies that were written specifically to make money would stop being produced. If only they would tell a decent story instead of a script tailored to appease the largest market possible. They're trying to appease the ignorant and small-minded majority, which isn't hard: just throw in a 1-liner every 30-40 seconds and some explosions. And unfortunately this causes a circular pattern as parents expose their children to such 'entertainment' and they grow up thinking it's normal...my generation are those doomed children. Luckily, some of us are able to see through the BS.
I had a second job at a dry cleaning place with an attached laundromat for a while, and laundromats tend to attract people from that same demographic. (There were tons of normal people in there as well...I'm not trying to put down anyone that's ever gone to a laundromat.) I've seen so many people that couldn't read, couldn't comprehend the clearly written 5 lines of instructions on the machines, messed up and demanded a refund because directions are for dumb people (oh sweet irony), or ruined their own clothes by not using the machines properly. I would always explain exactly why the damage occurred...but no matter what I said, it was always the businesses' fault. Idiots always assume that they are not idiots...they can't possibly be at fault, so they blame someone else for their mistakes. And that's my point. If they can't select a temperature, insert some coins into a slot, and press the huge start button with all the directions printed in front of them then hopefully they didn't just operate a complex, 3000lb vehicle to get here!? And despite their apparent lack of aptitude, they could carry on semi-intelligent conversation all day about the latest pop. culture developments...this is all that matters in American culture anymore. It's cool to be completely stupid, rich, but 'in the know' in context to Hollywood. Watch any 3 American rap videos for exhibits A,B and C...
Just walking down the street here can make me chuckle at the freakin clowns all around me. I don't even know how they all manage to survive...I not-so-secretly wish a huge natural disaster would occur that forced everyone into survival mode. Maybe a virus will mutate that only infects people with low IQs. We need a reset button.:D

idiocracy anyone? (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387808/)
like everyone has said, much of the stigma America gets actually is well-founded. I just really hope Mike Judge's dream of the future doesn't come to pass. lol

SOOOO true
kinda like Pit Bulls....they're the most loving, sweet and caring dogs out there. They're nicknamed the mother dog for a reason. But the only ones you ever hear about are the bad ones. And they dont bother to explain why.
I heard on the news a while back of a pitbull that bit some guy in the arm. The news blew it up like pitbulls are bad and blah blah blah. What they failed to mention however is tht the dog came froma fighting background, was chained up outside alone all day, never got attention, never played with, hardly fed, adn the guy that got bit was instigating the dog! But no they dont tell you that part
I LOVE my pit bull, she's the most adorable, fun-loving and happy puppy ever. Hence the reason why I made the picture below this -----V :whistler:

I'm hoping that it'll turn around to be a good thing. For example, we'll get sick and tired of everyone looking at us in that kind of light, whether its true or not, so we'll eventually get a handle on it. Depends on how this country takes criticism, it can sometimes be a good thing with the right kind of people. I love when people criticize me, it sucks but that's why it works. Someone says something about you, you don't like it, so you change it and thus you become a better person or whatever. I HOPE that's how our country and most countries will eventually be like, but I kind of doubt it. You usually need intelligent people for such a thing to work and America isn't exactly the brightest nation on earth. I wish we would just push education hardcore, but it'll never happen. We say we value it, but we really don't. You can ask anyone if they'd be willing to pay more in taxes to have a better education system and they'll say no. It doesn't benefit them here and now, which is what people want. Nobody will ever do anything for the future or for our fellow countrymen, we only do things for ourselves. Just look at the healthcare debate. I mean c'mon people, you may not need a national/universal healthcare, but your neighbors and their kids and even your kids might. I just don't get how we can have so little compassion for other people, especially our own people. Then again, can't really blame them, our government takes so much out of peoples pay its no wonder people will fight anything that'll take more from them, whether its for the greater good or not.
Wow. That was all over the place, sorry about that. lol...

Wow. That was all over the place, sorry about that. lol...Hehe. It's OK. My rant was even more random.
...they're the most loving, sweet and caring dogs out there. They can also be fiercely protective like my dog. She's not pure Pit Bull and nobody really knows what else is in her, but she can destroy people if they seem to be threatening our family. She's nice and friendly until she see's someone hitting one of us (even jokingly)...then she flips out and gives the meanest warning growl you will ever hear in your life, if things don't calm down she puts a stop to it. There has been blood. She's not a mean dog and was only ever trained that the bathroom is outside and not to bother the cats upstairs. I can understand how some people might view my dog as the Spawn of Satan, because they started sh!t and the dog ended it...but she's loving and friendly unless repeatedly provoked. Also, any breed can be trained to be an attack dog and banning Pit Bulls will only prevent law abiding owners (the ones that don't train fighters) from having them. The fact that they are being banned leads me to my next point: politicians aren't inherently intelligent or necessarily capable of deep, rational thinking.
from a political standpoint.... i guess stupid ppl r much easier to influence.. I don't believe for a second that there is a conspiracy to keep the American public 'dumb'. The majority of us do that by ourselves. I had friends back in high school that were repeatedly told again and again that they needed a diploma to get a decent job. They decided that that was just 'The Man's' way of keeping them down...They instead dropped out of high school and had kids...making minimum wage...living wherever they could find a roof and eating all their meals from the local McDonald's. They don't have any disorders or disabilities, they are simply mentally lazy and they don't care about their situation. It's just so much easier to watch celebrity news and reality TV all day. There are tens of millions more people in this country just like them with varying degrees of intelligence and limited knowledge...we are well on our way to Idiocracy.
As for taking responsibility for one's own actions...it does happen, but that will never be in the news.
OK, my post was a little out of hand...so let's steer back towards the OP...
So the mother of the white kid is suing the school district for not protecting her son even though the fight was investigated and ruled her sons fault.Self defense is not a crime...race has nothing to do with anything. The case should have been thrown out before a judge was even involved in the matter...but it's more likely that a warning label will be tattooed on every baby reading "Warning: May defend self and cause bodily harm."
The article also mentioned that last year a woman sued the same school district for her kid tripping over a curb in the parking lot and breaking her wrist.I hope they were laughed out of the court room but I suspect not. If I were the judge in such a case, I'd mandate an eye exam and that she drink at least one glass of milk a day. We can't go around suing every place that has a curb can we? Does anyone else have trouble walking over curbs? Do we need to be reminded that our fresh coffee is hot? Or that there are nuts in peanut butter? Should we put plastic bags over infants heads or no? What part of a chainsaw should I touch? Should I ingest poison? If we keep up with all the inane warning labels, then survival of the fittest goes right out the window...we are devolving.
I think if a law is passed that makes it a crime to waste court time and demands that violators serve 90 days in jail, it would greatly reduce such nonsense. And the crime should become part of a permanent record which lawyers can check before even listening to what the jackass has to complain about. Also, no more windfalls...spill hot coffee on your lap? Your fault...case dismissed. An employee spills hot coffee on your lap, the company pays for any expenses incurred such as dry cleaning, medical if necessary, a car wash--inside and out, and any lost wages due to missing work. You do NOT get $3 million for "your inconvenience"...f**k you.
