View Full Version : Help me to help people who need care!

Hi guys.

For those who haven't been following the Ballad of DaveW, I'm now a researcher working on systems designed to improve the quality of life for people who require care. This is primarily aimed at an older audience, but we're also aiming at a wider range of potential users including people with mental disabilities that would normally prevent them living alone, wounded soldiers who want to leave hospital, and people with serious sensory impairments such as deaf-blind people.

The research I'm working on revolves around replacing the idea of a smart home (which requires ripping a house apart to fit the technology) with technology that can be placed into the home non-destructively. In particular, there's a heavy focus on lifestyle management, in particular reminders. Reminders can be simple things such as closing doors or turning off lights, or much more complex things such as reminding someone to eat, to take their medicine, or to maintain social contact with the outside world.

The end goal is to reduce the dependence of our users on their carers, as this helps them retain their independence as long as possible by living in their own homes instead of care homes, hospitals, and hospices.

At the moment, we're gathering as much information as possible about the things people will want to remember about the home, and the systems people might use to remember things. We're doing focus groups with our expected users, but we also want information from the general populace. This is where you come in.

What I'm asking for is 5 minutes of your time to head on over to http://multimemohome.com/share and tell us a story about something you've forgotten. It could be something menial, like forgetting to set your alarm, put your phone in your pocket, etc. Or it could be something much more. Just tell us the last thing you forgot about the home. It helps us more than you'll know.

If you have more time, there's other things you can do to help us out. Have a look at http://multimemohome.com/get_involved. There's an online questionnaire there that would really helps us out if you had the time to fill in. This research could really make a difference to people's lives, so you could consider it your good deed for the day. Plus, it's helping to make a better future for all of us.

Thanks everyone!

-Dave

Thanks Mach, I really appreciate that! Remember everyone, no matter how menial it might seem, everything you can submit helps us. :)

Also, if you're feeling particularly helpful, repost it on your twitter, mySpace, Facebook, blogs, etc. "Hey, a friend of mine is working on this great research project..." :)

Thanks guys!

Dave, I will forward this to Kathy. Maybe her special needs classes can lend a hand with info too since they are probably some of the people you are targeting with this.

I will do this tonight. My Great Grandmother forgets to take her daily medicine all the time.

Just a heads up, your site doesn't support IE6. Tried to post, no go. Will do so when I get home.

Really Kayin? I tested it in about 25 browsers and it rendered fine, and all the code is done server-side. There shouldn't be a conflict with IE6. Is the reCaptcha box the problem?

-Dave

EDIT: I see the problem! Where has the ruddy button gone? What's causing that? It's a standard HTML submit button...

Ok, fixed the IE6 bug. You always look out for anomalies...can't believe I didn't see that something was missing entirely! Anyone particularly interested, I tripped up on the absolute positioning bug in IE6.

Thought I'd fix it, but my official stance is that I don't code for IE6 anymore. According to my stats, a marginal amount of my visitors are using IE6. From what I can see there's only a few anomalies. It even looks ok in IE5.5. I'm surprised! :)

All have at work is IE6. Stupid obsolete stuff.

Yeah, I know that can be a problem. :) Thanks for pointing it out. If you see anything else that's website breaking, let me know. :)

Also, everyone! This is for everyone! Just write a story about the things you want to remember, the things you forget, or the ways you remember things. :) Please?

Offer Rep :P You'll get more people.
I do it just to help :)
I'll have my grandma and other set of grandparents fill it out (I think they all know how to use a PC)

Sure, + rep to those who help. Now get posting!

(Jeez, you'd think making the world a better place would be enough for some people...)

Oh, I can pass this on to the other residents and get them to add some "forgotten woes" as I'm sure they have as many as I. I can threaten not to take call for them until they fill it out. :)

A few more things;

First, we're planning to run tests of software in people's homes within the next two years. We're also partnered with a number of companies, including a sensory services company in Scotland and a company called Halliday James who actually build these systems commercially. So the chances of our research getting to a practical conclusion are pretty good.

Regardless, we're operating on an open research policy. That means that we're sharing everything; data, research papers and source code with other researchers and scientists. This means that everyone can work towards a better future, not just those who can afford to pay for the expensive journals. :)

Thanks to everyone who's helped out so far, and a big thanks to those who are taking the survey. If you want a direct link to the survey then click here. (http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/52QNSYJ) Survey takes about 10 minutes. Thanks again guys. :)

To all of those who've taken the survey, thank you. I'm told that we've received over 120 submissions, between our contacts and the members of this site. That's a terrific number, as we were hoping for 100 in total by the end of the survey. Now we're hoping to get 200.

More people taking the survey means we have greater confidence in our results, which we'll be sharing with other researchers the world over. A huge thanks to everyone who's contributed.

We'll also be submitting a poster to a small SICSA event in Edinburgh on the 17th December, and we'll be displaying some of the anecdotes from the MMH project website. We're loving the stories we've got already, so keep those coming too. :)

Those links again:
1) Take The survey here (http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/52QNSYJ)
2) Tell us a story here (http://www.multimemohome.com/share)

Thanks again guys. :)

I forwarded an email to the group at the hospital with links to both the research and share pages so maybe you will rack up the surveys you need via referral.

Sweet man! We're pulling in huge amounts of traffic and the information we're getting is vital to our success. If anyone here hasn't contributed and has 5 minutes, consider this a subtle reminder. ;)
