I have modded a PSU for a bench tester and I hooked this up to a motherboard. nothing is in the motherboard (or any LEDs or a power switch) as I am just using the tester PSU for a on off switch except the cpu and 1 stick of ram. I am just testing to see if this motherboard is still alive.

Well, it powers on, the cpu fan spins up and it was beeping until I reseated the RAM (which fixed the beeping, now it does nothing). nothing is outputting to the monitor though. Do you need to have anything else plugged into the MB (such as a power switch?) or am I just being retarded?

Has it previously had a dedicated video card installed? If so, occasionally SOME bios will only boot from an add in card once it's been told to - and has to be manually told to go back to the onboard video.

Two quick options, one, install a video card - won't really matter what card, as long as it fits - second option is to reset the bios using the reset jumper, or remove the battery and power for at least 10 seconds - physically unplug the power - even turned off some power sometimes goes through depending on the PSU and caps etc...

Me personally I haven't had a dedicated card in it, but I am resetting the bios as we speak thought of that actually after I posted lol. havent tried it yet, my 2 year old was damanding some food for lunch. I'll try again and get back to you.

EDIT: nope... that didnt work. hmm.

Is it an old piece of kit? Some mobo's won't boot unless there is RAM in the first slot - when you reseated the ram did you move it? If you remove it, will it go back to beeping?

Try reseating the cpu also.. I've seen them not report an error, but not post before. Also, have you connected the second power cable to the mobo?

I know the cpu isnt an issue (at least I dont think,) because before I put this up in storage it posted just fine and booted into linux ok. and I'll have to double check on the second power cable. as for the ram, I had 2 sticks in, and took one out and left the other one in. maybe i'll try switching to the other ram slot. good idea. oh and +rep for the help. :D

EDIT: Here (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=bph07941) are the motherboard specs. I am going to reseat the ram and probably the cpu as well just to be safe. I have a feeling the board might be toast, as I didnt store it very well

oh well, the thing was free I just wanted to see if it still worked or not. was thinking about finally making use of it now that I have access to tools!

DOH! lol I am such an idiot. the ram is incompatible with this board. no wonder! its PC-3200 and the board only accepts pc-2100/1600 glad I looked through the specs of the board. oops. oh well, thanx for the help all. :D

Have you tried it with slower ram? I only ask because I have regularly used 3200 in boards which don't support it and it works fine, altho at the board supported speed instead of the actual RAM speed...

I dont have any, unfortunately the ram that came with the board got fried, somehow got shorted out if i remember correctly. Speaking of, I bet the ram slot got fried too? its been a long time since i've fired up this board (found it in my old closet @ my parents house). I bet the board is toast. oh well. no loss. I do however have a working Celeron 433mhz board. haha. wonder what to do with it.
