ok....I'm coming from Vista x64, now have Win7 x64 Pro (just installed it last night). Predominantly it seems to be about the same. But why in the HECK did Microsoft dump support for extra toolbars on the top/sides of the screen? My whole desktop was set up around that feature. Ugh. Anyway. Aside from that Win7 seems better than Vista, I just don't get why they decided to dump such a handy feature. I suppose I'll get used to it, after all I've made a shortcuts toolbar on my now overly-tall start menu. Go Microsoft! 10 steps forward, plus a few backward for good measure :P
(I'm a PC, and the lack of this Win7 feature was NOT my idea)

What about something like Rocket dock + the Stacker App?

rocket dock apparently doesn't work on the 64-bit versions, and I don't see why I should have to buy a 3rd party program to do what XP and Vista had built in. Mainly I'm just venting a little :)

Doesn't work on 64 bit? OK, I didnt know that... :(
What about using the sidebar? There must be some gadget out there that does what you need here.. I'll check into it too. :)
*edit* This might work for you...

Object Dock works with win 7. It's not as good as rocket dock but should do what you need until there's a nice rocket dock update.

I've discovered that rather than display all toolbar icons on the taskbar, if I scoot the toolbar over to the right as far as possible, it'll do a pop-up menu of icons. basically a slightly quicker start menu. It's not quite as good as the old toolbar system, but it's free (yay). I'll keep the other stuff in mind...I just didn't want to have to fork over $20 for something that used to be a part of the OS. I'll get used to it :)

A little off topic but... is rocket dock that much better than Object dock? I have been using object dock for over a year now and now that its been mentioned I feel like I am missing something.

I've found that rocket dock just feels a bit better. Also, whatever rocketdock uses to get the icons, it's a lot better than object dock. With object dock every steam game I own pops up with the little steam icon. It's obnoxious. I've never had that problem with rocketdock. Also, I've found more ways to crash my computer with object dock than with rocketdock.

With rocketdock, I just assign whatever icons I want.. why? did they add some auto-icon functionality?! /me runs to download it again

That's my frustration with object dock too. They make it impossible to add your own icons correctly. And . . . many of my shortcuts point to the wrong location . . . even though they work on the desktop before placing them in object dock.
I still love having a dock for the things that don't break it.
