View Full Version : HDCNC by LoKi
Hi there!
I started this project because I need a "Heavy Duty CNC" (HDCNC) controller case for my cnc :D
This case is meant to go outside the house, in the workshop.. and it won't have any hanging cables, exept for the power cord and the 3 control cables :)
I start with this old printer server case (Weights 24 Kilos):

http://thumbnails21.imagebam.com/5889/d157ac58889418.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/d157ac58889418)
This keypad is useless.. it will be replaced later. and i'll keep the LCD for future projects :D

http://thumbnails3.imagebam.com/5889/3ab7ac58889424.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/3ab7ac58889424)
Backside of the front:
http://thumbnails23.imagebam.com/5889/a5144d58889423.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/a5144d58889423)
Keypad plaquette:
http://thumbnails23.imagebam.com/5889/863d7f58889425.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/863d7f58889425)

http://thumbnails24.imagebam.com/5889/67848d58889427.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/67848d58889427)
I needed to make a new mothertray because the server one wasn't an ATX.
http://thumbnails25.imagebam.com/6062/9e251b60610142.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/9e251b60610142)
Finished piece:
http://thumbnails25.imagebam.com/6062/8e1dd160610155.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/8e1dd160610155)
Already on the road, I've made a tray for the cnc controller:
http://thumbnails25.imagebam.com/6062/8e904c60610165.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/8e904c60610165)
http://thumbnails24.imagebam.com/6062/6ec3af60610173.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/6ec3af60610173)
Motherboard on its place:
http://thumbnails23.imagebam.com/6062/e3a2fe60610175.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/e3a2fe60610175)
As you can see, the motherboard back is pointing upwards, this is because I need all the cables to stay inside the case.
http://thumbnails23.imagebam.com/6062/bb82d760610181.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/bb82d760610181)
Bays with the CNC controller and cnc power supply:
http://thumbnails5.imagebam.com/6062/b1de7d60610184.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/b1de7d60610184)
The top view of the case, I think I'm going to put a window in there, so I can check on the controller cooler.
http://thumbnails25.imagebam.com/6062/8977cc60610186.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/8977cc60610186)
I needed a new keypad to control the machine movements (Up down, X and Y axis, Run program, pause program, etc) so i decided yo go for it :D
20 cm cables with their terminals:
http://thumbnails17.imagebam.com/6116/6ffc5a61158214.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/6ffc5a61158214)
Milled plastic:

http://thumbnails26.imagebam.com/6116/47888f61158219.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/47888f61158219)
Semi-assembled keypad:
http://thumbnails10.imagebam.com/6116/95873461158220.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/95873461158220)
The ideas for this case are also:
15" LCD display on the side.
NO keyboard, NO mouse
a nice paintwork :D
filtered airflow
side and upper window for constant hardware check.. don't forget there will be some high tension stuff around there XD
All for now, thanks for watching :D
Well so how does the keypad work?
I disassembled a keyboard and found the PCB
http://thumbnails8.imagebam.com/6124/f7079661232796.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/f7079661232796)
And had to follow all this circuit:
http://thumbnails24.imagebam.com/6124/24a9f761232798.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/24a9f761232798)
to came up with a simple scheme of wich pins I needed to interconect to press the desired keys:
http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/5448/circuitotecladomodel.jpg
... soldering the cables to the PCB is going to be a hard work... any ideas to simplify that? XD
When I finish the keypad, i'm going to plot in some hard plastic sheet the buttons so it can look like a pro one :D
Here's a simple scheme of that:

I have to keep on the interior modifications to make the LCD fit in with the PSU, the CNC electronics, etc.. so stay tuned!!

LOL, is she there because you invited her?
Time is a must-have... I work in an office so I have less time to mod in the week...
The total ammount of money that I spented in this case untill now is about USD360, so its not that much :D
Where are my manners.. I haven't introduced my CNC mill, here it is

Sad face. Lol
Window frame :D
Angle saw in hand, I cutted all the pieces for the window frame, it lacks some adjustement and the "Heavy duty" effect (You'll see :whistler:)

I drilled some holes for the "Heavy duty" look:
http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/1939/photo6nm.jpg
After i put it all together, It'll be painted with this "Hammered" color:
http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/3852/photo5s.jpg
5 metes of white tubing for the PSU, in this store
http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/3982/photo4fu.jpg
I pasted the frame to the side pannel with plastic welding, and stuffed the unions.
http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/35/img0792qd.jpg
Unions without sanding:
http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/4913/img0793p.jpg
Everything sanded and ready for primer:

Should rust oleum be paying me for this photo? :P haha
http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/1194/img0795j.jpg
A good layer of primer after.. I try to hang the panel from the roof and.... PUMMM!!!
http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/4728/img0796w.jpg
You can see the heavy hit in the corner... enough to brake the plastic welding that wasn't completely dry...
A hard hit for the modder spirit... I'll try to make some holes in the panel and bolt the frame to it..
Stay tuned!!

Wow I really like this project. I hope you aren't too setback dropping that panel, I want to see this done. How hard is it to mod the keyboard for the input like that, I want to try that for some reason.

Arrrrgh, nightmare thing to happen that, but hopefully you can carefully beat it back into shape with a hammer, don't let it get you down, but I know for cirtain the initial reaction would be FFFFFFFFFFFF.
I want to save up and make a cnc mill myself sometime in the future, they are just too much of an awesome tool not to have, maybe I'll make that my next project instead of a case build this year.

It's not very hard... but I ended up using 3 keyboards because I broke the first two :P But old keyboards are free :D I guess the real trick is in thoroughly cleaning the PCB, and using a not-too-hot welder.

You two are quite right, it was a massive FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF F :fight::bash:
a CNC mill is an awesome machine, you're right... and a nice project is to make a DIY.. But if you are like me and you can't wait to have one, there are some not so expensive ones in market... Mine costed USD 2600, and it can machine alu with no problems :D
Well, update..
After two days of cursing... I decided to make the window frame again, but this time REALLY HEAVY DUTY!!
Here you can see the holes planned:

Some primer (Again)
I had no choice other than making the holes that where at the edge with the nibbler

The frame pieces painted with hammered gray:

Out of focus detail of the hammered:
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/4616/img0809e.jpg
I have to seal the holes that remained from the LCD mounting bending:

With an acrylic pipe like this:
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/5445/photo6jr.jpg
I have made a "Cable holder" out of it, so the VGA cable isn't all messy in the case:
http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/2054/photo5n.jpg
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/6981/photo4kk.jpg
And I plotted an image for the front, it still lacks the frontal USB, pow button, and the trackball (A genius traveller):D
http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/313/photo7no.jpg
PS: The LCD is holded on it's place by metal tabs, the black tape is only a temporary cover for the high voltage zone.
PS2: sorry for the poor quality of the pics :dead:

AWESOME! I love the video cable holder, a great idea! here's a further idea - if the acrylic is thick enough, drill a couple holes into the edges and stick 5mm LEDs in there to light up the tube. Or use UV, and coat or wrap the cable in something UV-reactive. I don't know how realistic it is to do that, but it'd look really awesome. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Artoo! I'm not going to put any lights on this case, cause it'r going to be in the workshop.. and I want it to look nice from the outside only XD
I can now say... IT'S ALIVE!!
