I don't have one, I'm just clarifying for others; this would be a 2.5in drive as it is for a laptop correct?

Wait a sec.. I'm lost. She has a laptop with a sata hdd, correct? You can buy another hard drive if you want, but it will still have to be SATA. Laptops dont have both IDE and SATA.

Pressing F6 during the first screen of the Windows install, and selecting the proper drivers doesnt work?

Another thing you can try is to change the SATA mode in the BIOS. It's likely set to SATA or AHCI. Try changing it to IDE or COMPATIBLE. The regular XP installer should be able to detect it in that mode.
