View Full Version : What My Wife And I Got With Our Christmas Money.

I have been saving my money for a while. My wife and I have been sleeping on an air bed for over a year now. We moved three times this year (her school, student teaching, now my school) so it was a logical choice. We got the $250 Aerobed. I had read many reviews and it was the best every time. It was also going to be our main bed, so cutting corners and getting something cheap wouldn't really cut it. I have to say that we have both adapted very well to the change, but it's time for a new bed.

This Christmas we got $600 from family and I had $400 saved up, so we had $1000 to spend. This is where I love my wife to death. We ended up getting this mattress (http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Serta-8-inch-Queen-size-Memory-Foam-Mattress/4107277/product.html) from overstock.com and got $1 shipping. With $660 left we got this frame (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=12082083) from Wal-Mart.com and had it shipped to store for free shipping.

Down to $560 and we had already met our bed goal. Nice! I love that we are both budget minded.

Well, my wife and I have been feeling a bit overweight lately and our bathroom scale has confirmed it. My wife enjoyed playing Wii Fit at my parents so I got on newegg and ordered a Wii and Wii Fit Plus. Tax free and free shipping brought the total to $299.97. I love that. The extra $260 is going into our savings account and I am going to start saving for bicycles in the spring. Our town (pop. 23,000) has over 25 miles of paved trails and I would also like something to get around town instead of walking (slow) or riding my motorcycle (no workout).

In addition to the money we both got, I got $100 from my mother in law and a $40 Worst Buy gift card from my brother in law. I used the money and got the logitech G35 headset.

All in all I am super happy. My wife and I have been married a little more than a year and in that time she has finished school, got a really great job, we have purchased a car in full, no auto-loan, that should last us quite a long time (2001 Subaru Outback L.L. Bean edition). We are paying off my wife's student loans at a fast pace and will have them paid off by this time next year. I have a 4.0 GPA and will continue to push and work as hard as I can. Things are going great and I see no reason that anything will change. Sure some unexpected expenses will come up, but that is why my wife and I have a $4000 emergency fund. Our rent is only $500 a month, so $4000 is plenty of emergency money.

Anyone else feel great?

good deal. YOu two sound like you really have your heads on your shoulders. I have gotten pretty budget conscious in the last 6-7 months also. Currently saving up $$ to pay cash for a new bike this summer and the trip to CES in 2011. Then I will begin saving for a laser cutter.

Super jealous of the $500 a month rent...down where I live we went from a touch under $2000 for a 1100sqft 2-bed, to about $1650 for a 1000sqft 2-bed, and that was about the best we could do...we *could* drop down to a 1-bed and get a storage unit, but that'd still be around $1000 a month. and with 2 cats, 3 chinchillas, and 2 people, a 1-bed ain't that big. Still, I'm happy for you guys, hope things continue to be great!
Oh yeah, and on a positive note, we got season d-land passes and one o'them LG Bd390 blu-ray players for christmas! Woo Hoo!!

Maybe we can get a group together for CES 2011. I have been wanting to attend for a long time. This year would be a great year to go. For a few years I've been disappointed, but this year it seems that there's a lot more cool new tech being talked about. I want a laser cutter, but I want the machinery to be able to create pretty much anything in one shop. Haha.

Yeah, that $500 a month is for a two bedroom with water included, but we pay for electricity. It was the cheapest two bedroom we could find and I'm so grateful to have it. Our neighbors aren't great. They keep parking in our spot despite the fact that we have assigned parking spots and my motorcycle is in that spot as well.

Disneyland passes would be great if I were in the area. I love Disneyland.
