For the first time in my life, I have seen a CRT television fail. I've had a lot of them over the years and when I got rid of every one of them they still worked. They just never seemed to fail. Ironically I was just telling my wife a week ago that those things never fail and two days later ours died. Bad enough but it was only 2 years old! I got a tiny little TV out of our attic that I've had for 12 years and was probably ten years old when I got it, and it works fine.

Good news is, I got to buy a new TV. I went to the store intent on buying a 32" LCD, but of course I found something better. For $120 more I got a 42-inch plasma. Holy CRAP. I went from a 32" square-screen CRT to this monster and all I can say is WOW.

Yeah, I know, this thread is all "Look at me! Look what I got!" But I'm just so PROUD!

Another bonus is that now I have an old CRT to take apart. I think I read somewhere that I could get a transformer out of it that would be suitable for building a Jacob's ladder. Can anyone confirm or deny that?

Watch out taking that CRT apart, we would hate to see you fry!
Also, those plasmas get pretty hot, or at least ours did. Then it stopped working <1 yr so it went back to costco. Watch out for burn in, don't leave it on something stationary.

Gratz dude, looks really good!

Yes, be careful taking that old TV apart. Even when unplugged there can be as much as 30kv on the crt itself and the caps in the crt tv's can hold a 120v charge for a long time.

Congrats on the new TV.

Volts might hold you, but it's amps that kill, and there's enough amps in even a small CRT to burn your heart black. Be careful, and great find!

Nice!! now you just need to go get yourself a bluray player (if you don't have one already, I'm guessing not since you just got your first flatscreen). My girlfriend and I have a 46" LCD, and while we've been using a decent LG upscaling DVD player (HDMI connection), we just got the $$ to switch to an LG BD-390 player. It streams netflix and youtube wirelessly (no extra dongle to buy as with Samsung), and it was cheaper than the corresponding samsung and sony models. Not sure how much it's going for now, we paid under $300 last month.
Anyway. Just got a bluray copy of the Planet Earth series...and HOLY @#$@$$@. It looks nothing short of stunning - like the difference between standard definition and high definition TV. Ultra crisp, clear picture and the level of detail is stunning! I can't wait to get more blurays, although I'm still not convinced to spend $35+ on one movie :)

BTW...doth mine eyes deceive me, or is that Dr. Keller of SGA on the screen in your pic? (just finished watching the series this weekend, now need to catch up on SGU)

Your eyes are pretty good. We've got the most basic package available from Dish Network and there's not a lot to choose from for picture-taking at 2AM. :)

I am still being impressed by this thing. I thought the picture was awesome with my satellite signal. We rented Up from Pixar tonight and watched it with the kids. Holy CRAP. It was incredible. Substantially better than it looked in the theater.

I may start watching television. I *will* start watching more movies. :D

It's an Emerson model PL-P42W-10A. I got it at Wal-Mart for $499. They also have it online (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=12536729#Specifications) with free shipping for the same price.

I honestly don't know about gaming, it doesn't have DVI input and I just got a DVI/HDMI adapter and HDMI cable today. Hope to check out what my computer looks like on it. Not holding my breath with that large a picture, but I can't *not* hook it up and look at it. :)

confirm, The flyback transformer thats attached to the tube itself, You'll see the anode sticking off the side of the tube, the thing its connected to is the transformer,

FYI there are also pots on the flyback to adjust brightness, 5v feed and saturation. Easy fix for those old CRT's that look sorta of "grey"

You'll need a extremely long flat head screw driver.

Stick the head of that screw driver under the "suction cup" looking deal on the anode, and touch the other end to the grounding ring around the front of the tube (thing that degausses the CRT, and makes that pissed off BURRRRRrrrr sound when it first turns on) You'll ground out the board and make it safe to work on, sometimes it takes a couple taps, Don't be scared about the lighting bolts shootin' off.

everyone is right about the seriously high voltage, its also at a seriously high frequency, so expect to be stuck to the monitor till someone knocks you off if you screw up.

they can hold there potential for a few days on average, so its always safe to ground out the CRT the way i described.

I've gotten a love tap from a CRT once, and once is all that needs to happen to make you respect it hahahhahaha

I won't get to working on this for a month or more, so I should be good. Thanks for the info!

Funny story:

When I was in Jr. High School, I worked for my dad at his electronics repair shop. I was with him one day on a service call to fix a TV. It was a little dark behind the monster Magnavox console and I was holding the flashlight so he could see what he was doing. He went to discharge the voltage from the crt, but was in a rush and his finger was touching the lead of the device he had to short it out. I saw a bright flash of electricity jump from his plumber's butt to the heating register right behind him. He must have jumped right over that tv he moved so fast! He still has the scar from that experience.

No problem, Do not plug it in, or turn it on while you in back, There are actually numerous things inside that can make you see jesus for a split second.

have any Q's on the parts just snap a pic and PM me and i see whats up.
