After the succes of my mini-project Hovermax (http://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/list_messages/1375817///hovermax) (fan mod for Enermax) I got the irresistible urge to make a complete mod with the same look-n-feel.
The inspiration for Hovermax and this mod I got from the F117 - Nighthawk
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth-bomber.jpg
to mod a case from the swedish Fractal Design company http://fractal-design.com/ to give it a whole new look.

http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_090.jpg
For the specs of this case, I can point you to the log of my collegue Jos a.k.a. Agressions (http://forum.bouweenpc.nl/topic/9727), who just so happens to have started a mod with the same case.
I made in SketchUp a few rough designs and showed them to the guys at Fractal Design. They were unanimous to pick this one;

cant wait.
Just looked at your Hovermax, wonderfull!! Can't wait to see this one!
Could you try moving the base line at the front a couple of cm backwards? I think i'll make the nighthawk look more complete, try breaking the triangle of the front :D

The guys at Fractal Design liked the first sketches, so lets start modding !
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_100.JPG
Started with disassembling the case and also applying the first cut lines.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_101.JPG
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_102.JPG
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_103.JPG
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_104.JPG
Nice doors that hold the dust filters....
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_105.JPG
..but i'm not using these in my design, I need a solid front. Sorry guys !
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_105b.JPG
BTW; this front/top panel is very nice !
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_106.JPG
But it s also NOT included in my design hehehe
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_107.JPG
Very nice multifunctional switch ( would be a waste NOT to use it right ? )
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_108.JPG
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_109.JPG
The chassis underneath the front needs to be cut in the same way.

this looks like it'll be pretty darn cool...but I have to admit I envision you hacking away at it with a chainsaw. Not the best for cutting a case up accurately, but man it'd be FUN! :)

Looks nice! Always liked the F117 stealth fighter a lot. I am however very eager to find out how you will cope with the structural integrity of the case, which will be deminished by cutting off almost every corner...
Anyways, can't wait to see more!

So true. But isnt that the name of the game ? I'm never afraid of a bit of a challenge. :)

Can't wait to see how you do this!

same here. love Frenkie's mods!
you could always use small diameter pvc or metal tubes for support for the outer framework. (if its even needed)

Disassembling the drive tower, maybe I can use it still, or at least part of it.

Sawed the frontpanel.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_122.JPG
Mounted both sidepanels.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_123.JPG
To determine the right lines; this measurement from the sidepanel to midpoint.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_124.JPG
Transferred to the X-axis.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_125.JPG
And the Y-axis.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_126.JPG
Gives a nice 45 degree angled line.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_127.JPG
This line goes in the middle of that 45 degree line.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_128.JPG
And here I made a mistake, I toke the middle of the sidepanel as reference.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_129.JPG
Which looked like this.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_130.JPG
But in the end I choose for the original mobo-chassis, which you can see here.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_131.JPG
Here ones more the wrong and the right line.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_132.JPG
Cutted.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_133.JPG
And mounted back to the case.

To give you a better insight, here a paint-preview :)

These are the lines of the black sheets of Forex hardfoam and the transparant polystyreen.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_137.JPG
There all triangles.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_138.JPG

Here is my latest toy. :)
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_140.JPG
Anyway, I riveted the motherboard back to the case.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_141.JPG
Now what motherboard will we choose for this mod... this one is from the FiFo mod, but its way too big.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_142.JPG
This Asus P5KPL mobo, is a lot smaller.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_143.JPG
Or this Sapphire moederbord ( Here with a Spire cooler still on it.)
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_144.JPG
But thanks to my friends at Gigabyte I'm getting a Core I5 GA-P55A-UD5 mobo.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_150.JPG
And the people at Coolermaster provided me with a fat V10 !
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_151.JPG
On the last pix it looked like the boards wont fit, but I measurered it;
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_145.JPG
And enlarged. It fits, but only JUST. ( pfffewww lucky me )
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_147.JPG
The sawed off front ....
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_148.JPG

http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_158.jpg
Guide Aiming Laser FTW!
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_159.jpg
Im building the case up from the rear to the front.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_160.jpg
Piece of cardboard to test my idea
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_161.jpg
Then reproduced it in Forex.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_162.jpg
As added bonus I gave this edge a 45 degree bevel.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_163.jpg
Using black construction kit, I added the first piece to the case, After it hardened, i
noticed that the strength was coming back to the case. Just like i planned it would.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_154.jpg
Now I can determine the exact measuerments for the second piece.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_155.jpg
Three lengths, Three angles, One plate of Forex.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_164.jpg
And there it is.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_156.jpg
The second piece is added.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_157.jpg

If you're anything like me, part of you HAS to feel bad about cutting into such a beautiful case... However - WOW! Great idea!!! This thing is going to be SICK when you're done with it!
Frenkie
03-11-2010, 05:00 PM
True, the Fractal Design case IS a beauty without any modifications. And yes, I have cut it pretty bad.... But in my mind it is becoming better and better. :)
The next piece will be one of the cockpit windows. For this I use smoked-plexi.
This is with protecting foil on both sides.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_165.jpg
Here one corner without the foil.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_166.jpg
Cutting it also gives a lot of mess !
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_167.jpg
Here it will come.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_168.jpg
I will spraypaint case and the edges in silky-matblack. So I will leave the protecting foil where it is.
It has no use to remove it and mask the same piece again later.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_169.jpg
And here come the bevels again.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_170.jpg
This is what holds it all together; Power Fix kit and liquid soap to smooth out the edges.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_171.jpg
There, another piece is done.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_172.jpg
It is not going too fast, I deliberatly wait every time untill the glue has hardened. Also I have limited spare time.
We'll get there, I just ask you have patience with me.

Been very busy with my new job (was unemployed for a year) and have to work overtime too. In the evenings I dont have much time or energy left to do a lot of modding. Gradually it goes a bit better, so here is a update.
During the build I found that the "nose" was going to give me trouble if I didnt modify it.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_173.JPG
First in regular paper to see what I needed.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_174.JPG
Then made it from Forex hardfoam plate.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_175.JPG
From the inside it looks like a weld.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_176.JPG
Last triangle piece with the edges bare for the construction kit, mid piece I wil remove after the spraypaint.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_177.JPG
Looking through the plexi.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_178.JPG
I will smoothen out all the edges.

http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_181.JPG
View from back left. You can see that the PC components in the front will also be radically altered because of the beveled pieces.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_182.JPG
To make the 'welds' more smooth, I warmed the kit in a bucket of hot water.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_183.JPG
Cant see it very clearly here, but its smoother.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_184.JPG

Yes, youre right. The construction will never have the same strength again as it used to be..... but... it overall suprised even me how sturdy the whole thing is now. It can easily be transported now without falling apart. :)
paper templates ftw.im glad were not too advanced to still use them. thats gonna look mean when its done.
Thanx man, yes paper or cardboard templates give you a lot of information in advance of cutting precious metal or plastic. Good tip !
Started selecting model-parts for the kit-bashen.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_188.JPG
Also have some in chrome-silver colour, might be able to use that too.

Some of the parts.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_189.JPG
What you reckon, is this from a kawasaki ? :P
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_190.JPG
The side-panels were way to bare, so I need some wings growing there. Trying some setups in Sketchup.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_192.JPG
Something like this, with bombs, two red lasers and missilles underneath the wings.

The way you've fit so many pieces together so smoothly is very impressive.
Interesting idea with the wings. It's a step away from the 117, but hey, that's why we say 'inspired by'. :P
I love this build Frenkie, But, I wouldn't put wings on it.. I'll be a pain in the b** every time you try to put it on a small place.. That's just my opinion..
How about trying to give the wing "Idea" with two stripes on the sides¿?
Something like this:

I repeat, just an idea :)
Frenkie
05-31-2010, 01:47 PM
luv the paint skillz :) And it IS a valid idea. It is also a lot more practical indeed when using the case. But this time I choose for IMpractical ( or is it INpractical? ) and so i'll be using massive-oh-my-god-I-broke-a-piece-of-again wings ! :)

Looking at this front view, you can look through the plexi where you can spot the kit. After spraypainting you wont see any of that.

About 5,5 kg. But thats without that bitumen padding Fractal Design uses to silence the case and no hardware inside. :P

After I removed the ducttape, I stripped the excess kit.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_226.JPG
Here I added allready a small line of kit before I track it with soap.

Ah the mini-lasers are in.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_230.JPG

More irritating, impractical protruding pieces added: the Tail section.
After I doodled in Sketchup, printed it out on paper.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_251.JPG
The length was to big, so I cut quite a piece of. And ofcourse bevelled the edges.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_252.JPG
Trying to find the 'right' way to stick it on.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_253.JPG

Yea, I'd totally leave the nose out. I think at that point it might be a little bit too much. Besides, I think if you wanted to have the nose, you'd want to start it higher up and have it at a more drastic angle. IMO anyways...

http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_240b.JPG
Viewing from the front it didnt look half bad....
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_243b.JPG
But looking form the side...it sucked. BAD IDEA.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_242b.JPG
Started with detailing using old-fashioned kit-bashing.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_273.JPG
Hmmm isnt that an exhaust form a motorcycle.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_274.JPG
Stick it on with some construction kit on apropiate places.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_275.JPG
Ofcourse left and right as much equal divided.

http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_281.JPG
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_282.JPG
I didnt forget about the rear, also some model parts added.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_278.JPG
No, not sticking it on just like that....
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_283.JPG
Neatly straight angled.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_284.JPG
One damaged rivet.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_285.JPG
Covered with a nice shaped modelpart.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/Stealth/Stealth_286.JPG
:D
The case is now covered with parts in all kind of strange sizes and shapes.
All in different colors, so after this tha painting will cover them all.

The form & seams look rather bada$$ & is totally unique which is what I like most with this, such a hefty change from what it was, very cool & so do most of the extra bits stuck on & lives up to the stealth theme 8).
But I'd lose the stickers that stand out like a sore thumb or try & make them look a little less like stickers or darken them up a bit if possible & maybe paint the missiles so they don't look like toys, I think if they were black & dark grey they would look awesome, the stickers on the tail look right though, I think it's just the emblems & crt shot down stickers that look off to me, could just be me :), still, it's an awesome mod Frenkie, have a nice holiday :).
