View Full Version : How much is my laptop worth?

Well I am planning on buying a 12" Asus dual core netbook (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220659) to replace my current laptop as the current one is too big for me to comfortably haul around and I finally found something smaller without compromising performance.

So I want to sell my current laptop to offset the cost as I wont need it anymore. But I am not sure how much it is worth and how much I should ask for it. I'd like to see $200 for it but I might be a bit too optimistic with the few problems it has.

Gateway M6817
Intel Core2Duo T5250 @1.5ghz
Intel Mobile 965 graphics
Wireless N and gigabit Ethernet
2gb RAM
250gb HD
15.4" widescreen (1280x800 max res)
1.4mp built in webcam
I am currently running Windows 7 Ultimate, originally shipped with Windows Vista Home Premium and has a key for that.

I have a carry case I am including with it as well. And can include a few other accessories if I have them.

The bad:
-Battery only holds a charge for 10min at most, more than long enough to save data and proper shut down if the power cuts out.
-The power cord got damaged and had to be soldered back together, works fine just need to be careful.
-Trim piece above keyboard is slightly loose on right side, this is cosmetic only
-Microphone for the webcam might not work (might just be a driver issue with windows 7)

The laptop works well and will play Half Life 2 if you turn down the graphics settings. This laptop is great for web browsing, office work, and some 3D gaming.

Hmm, well, with a fully functioning battery, I would put it at around $400, but with that mostly shot, I'd say around $300.

Hmm, that's still better than I thought. Anyone else care to agree or disagree with this price?

Doubts kill prices on second hand gear - personally, I'd reinstall Vista and find out for sure if the microphone works or not - if it doesn't it could be simply that, a hardware fault in the microphone itself, or it could be a sign of something worse, like a fault on the motherboard where the audio hardware sits.

Here in the UK I'd probably put a value of around £200-250 on it, which isn't far from the value x88x estimated.

That is probably what I am going to do after I get the netbook I am replacing it with.

Well I just went an ordered a new generic power brick for this from Amazon. That way I might be able to squeak out a bit more value from this when I try to sell it. Have a feeling buyers don't like electrical tape on their power cords.

You may also be able to find a cheap replacement battery. I agree that $300 is about right, so post at $500 obo, and see what happens. :)

Can't find a battery for under $50 so I'll leave that up to the new owner.

well whats the value of a new "refurbished" one of your laptops vs. a defective one?

might be able to get that battery, and still make a larger profit overall?

old goodies like external DVD players or PCMCIA cards, mice and keyboards that you can bundle together can help raise the price a bit. I tend to use just crap i have laying around if i come across a desktop/laptop i want to sell.

but people will tend to pay alot more for a laptop + keyboard mouse n' cheesy external LCD monitor (like a 89.99" 19" LCD) like 200-300$ more, even though you only dumped in 100$ still made 100-200 appear out of thin air for nothin'

best o' luck

:stupid:

Hehe.. not so stupid! If you include a bunch of extras, people will jump at it! Most people dont know that you can add external monitors/mice/keyboards to a laptop, and this way they are assured that these parts are compatible as well.

Maybe include some software/games as well? A completely updated, fresh install, with a solid antivirus makes for a good sale as well. Take home, plug in, turn on, enjoy. No updates, no viruses. :)

I was planning on reformatting the drive with a fresh install of the OS and some antivirus software. I can throw on some good practical applications like Open Office for good measure.

As for extras I have a few. Definitely including a carry case I have for this. I think I have one or two wireless mice that I really don't care for I could toss in with maybe a wireless keyboard. I do happen to have an external 15" (1024x768) LCD that isn't worth much to me I could toss in. Also got some old memory cards from a camera that died that happen to fit in the card reader on here. I don't have any external optical drives but this has a built in DVD burner which I should probably highlight.

Yup, just want to wait for the new laptop and the new power brick for this one to get in first. Then I'll set everything up and list it. So hopefully within a week.

It's only worth as much as someone will pay for it, but with that said, $300 would be realistic.
