Two questions. Why a square, and why in the middle?
You can cut it any shape you like, and anywhere you want to.
If I were doing that, I'd avoid showing off the disk mountings, so I'd keep it away from the front edge. Likewise the power supply, unless it's a good looking one.
Make a sketch, of the computer with the cover removed, on a sheet of card or paper the same size.
Decide what looks good, and what doesn't, and draw wavy lines around the good bits. More than one if need be. Then cut the hole(s) to show off the good but hide the ugly. Once you're happy with it, copy the holes to the actual panel.
Just my 2c worth. :-)

dont cut a square. cut something funky or unique. i was gonna cut a square into mine till i wanted more of a challenge (considering i used a 4" grinder). take a look at my case. let me know what you think.

Get wise cut any shape and file and sand edges.Paint it up,at least side panel and silicone window to inside of panel(less vibration).Pick a theme to work with for window and colors.Jo

well. i had vents in mine. but replaced with the fan instead. my comp isnt the quietest around, but under full load with vid card, i keep the temp at 30c, which is damn good for full load for a couplehours.

I just did a side pannel on my comp but i never thought of using a grinder. i drilled a hole and used a jigsaw 2 cut out the panel. Its a square but thats only cos u cant really do much with a jigsaw. And bartvandenberg how did u add the fans 2 the side, did u use a holesaw? great case man but i think for a couple of dollars extra u could get a decent fan grill.

yah. i know. sorry bout the fan grill thing. its been buggin me since i built it. ive been laid off from work for like a month now, and im so hurtin for coin, that i cant justify even a couple bucks on some nice fan grills. besides the fact that my gf would be on my case for spending more money on my case than on her. *cough*
but, i used a 4' core bit. i dont know what its called exactly, but its made for plexiglass and stuff. worked amazing. very nice clean perfect circle. then just drilled the 4 holes in with a reg drill.
and yes.. i love my keyboard/mouse combo. only prob is, i get so used to typing on my wonderful keyboard, that i simply cant type on regular ones anymore... oh well.. guess i wont stoop to that level anyway. :D

I would too, but a google for "core bit" gives similar results.
