Holy crap!
If that was on my computer I would have uninstalled it in seconds. That's just unacceptable, especially being such a famous program.

You know its only a leak if it doesnt go back down. ;)
I looked at my Steam.exe after I opened it up to the desktop. It was sitting about 60MB, by clicking the tabs, I was able to get it up to 80. As soon as I minimized it back to the task tray, it went to 7MB total. Most likely when you opened it, it was probably checking for an update, and populating the statuses of your games. Sure it might not have released it very fast, but I am not seeing any leaks on my system.

Windows 7 + Steam = 60MB RAM + 80MB Virtual. I don't see a leak ;P

24MB usage right now for me on steam.
that is the most sad steam game list i've ever seen

50% processor usage tells me it was probably updating the client. there was a new client released yesterday.
Is it always stuck at 1.0GB+ of mem usage?
might be time to delete it and reinstall (copy your source folder, and you don't need to re-download those 8 games)
mine sits at 7mb in tray, 9 when open the games tab, about 20 when browsing the store, and jumped to about 200 when updating a game,
the simple way to get steam to reinstall the client is goto the steam folder, and delete all your *.blob files when steam is closed, open steam and it then updates the client, downloads the latest version from the servers

Garrysmod can do some evil, evil things to a steam folder.
lots of things can do evil things to the steam folder, deleting the blob files forces steam to
reinstall itself and basicly reset everything

Ok, both I and my friend across the room here have encountered slowed performance after extended play.
I, having the crappier computer, have experienced it much more.
After about an hour or two of play, the game becomes extremely unstable, load screens take 3-6 minutes, i go from 77 fps to 10-22 fps.
Upon exiting the game and reloading it, all is fixed. So, I am proposing something is amiss w/ the game. Don't get me wrong, im still extremely pleased w/ it. I'm just a bit disapointed with reloading it every hour or two.
Anyone else experiencing this problem?
