Anyone have any tips on how to do? i've been reading the hell out of it.

basicly what i get is, prep and clean the parts your about to guild with alcohol or a acid based cleaner (I'm using diamond brite...for diamonds)

Then use a soft brush to stick it on. wait awhile then polish it smooth with a soft cloth for a couple hours until it looks like something master P would buy.

Going to do the front control arms on my Computer case. and maybe the fan grilles if i have enough left over.

there were two types, some fake gold (i guess it was copper based) for 15$ and the true 24k gold stuff. which was 45$ for a pack.

lol i got the real gold kind because i heard it'll tarnish over time.

Is that true? Really i didn't care i just wanted to be able to say my case has 24 karat gold on it LOL

What kind of gilding do you want to do? Water gilding will have the best results, but the process is really quite difficult. You will have to do a lot of prep and then apply the gold leaf at the end.

Oil gilding is a lot easier, but the results kinda suck in comparison. One major drawback is that you can't polish the gold like you can with water gilding. You will need an adhesive. Many craft stores will have a gold leaf adhesive that you will paint onto an area, then you will have to wait for it to get tacky and then apply the gold leaf.

I've done it a little bit before (just oil gilding). I recommend that you get the right tools. Get the brushes you need and watch as many videos as you can find. It will make all the difference. Also, practice on some stuff before you do it.

Also, I've never done this before, but maybe you can look into electrolytic plating. I'm not sure if it can be done DIY on the cheap, but it's also worth looking into if you want a mirror finish but don't want to do all the work of water gilding, which might not work well on heavily contoured, or extremely small components.

Good luck!

When get home, I did oil gilding for the sides of Mithril. It's a complex process, and easy to mess up, but the results are incredible.

thanks for the tips.

yea im going to practice on some plastic pieces before hand before i step it up to doing the actual parts i want to do.

I dont think i can electroplate plastic parts?

But lucky enough, my mom is painter and has litterely drawers and drawers of brushes and crap.

I farted around last night and did a 25 cent quarter with some gold leaf

actually looks pretty cool.

But i've been hellaciously sick (puking, aches, more pukin) these past couple days, so all this stuff has been on stand by.

I'll check out the leaf tack to, cause i didn't get any of that.

I was thinking... would 3M Super 77 Spray adhesive work for it?
