warranty issues

i have a buddy.. who wanted me to fix his portable HDD..(TWACK TWACK TWACK GRRRRNNNN TWACK TWACK... wanna guess whats wrong? lol)
thing is... it was a private sale... so he hasnt the warranty for the original unit..
its a fantom drive... but inside its a hitachi 1Tb... what does anyone... think the chances r of it being able to fall under the hitachi warranty?

check the drive model and serial number at http://www.hitachigst.com/portal/site/en/support/warranty/ it should tell you if its still under warranty

In my (admittedly) rather limited experience with HDD manufacturers (RMA'd stuff with Seagate and Samsung), since they keep on record when the drive was originally sold to the retailer, they tend to not really care who has it now, so they don't require a receipt.
