It's completely ruined my mousemat. I seem to have caught it before it did any damage to the actual mouse though. This has literally just happened. I'll post a pic when i get a chance-let this be a lesson, don't mix old and new batteries! This sort of thing happened to anyone else?

Nope, it is 100% true

I had a "D" cell battery blow up while sitting on my dresser. It was one of the batteries with a self tester built in. I've never owned another one of those.

It blew up; I mean jumped 3" off the desk and fell to the floor leaving white bubbly acid behind it. I heard a pop looked up and saw it hit peek height then fall and roll to the floor. It then sat there fizzing for 5 mins or more, and was real hot when finally picked it up.

Baking soda should neutrilize the acid.

of course it would making some hydrogen gas, according to my friend.

Battries contained nitric acid so put a lighter or match other it and it should pop because it releases hydrogen!! (Sorry I sounded like a nerd Science was my best subject!)

Wouldnt that make it nitrogen? I had this crazy friend who was a scientific genius - also the funniest person ive ever met. He never talked, but when he did it was always something incredibly funny or incredibly clever. He once made a load of hydrogen using a homemade hydrolysis device (using big drill batteries) and filled a load of bottles full of hydrogen - the kids on the bus were always throwing bottles around so he showed them what a real bottle fight was like and they never did it again :D He later built a 7ft high van de graff generator (sp?) in his shed. It's a shame though, he smoked too much weed and dropped out of school - Although is now making thousands on 2 ringtone and porn websites that he set up. He is 16 and earning more than most adults :D
This story had a moral, but I forgot it, so make up your own!
Peace

Of all the forums on the internet, this is probably the last one you have to appologize for being a nerd. I mean, we take perfectly good computer cases and "fancy them up" because a beige box isn't good enough for us, we demand our computers to have windows, LED fans, custom moulded perspex flames lit by sound activated CCFLs, bondo contours and embedded LCD monitors, fan controllers and mice crafted to look like fossils and cyclops!

I mean, if that isn't "nerdy", then my entire high school was shunning me for false pretenses! lol

That said, we prefer the term "geek". Us nerds are a touchy lot, lol.

don't mix old and new batteries!Absolutely.
Know why? Well, imagine the current flowing out of a battery positive, through the circuit and back into the negative. Now imagine two in series, Out of the + into the - of the other, from the + of that, through the circuit and back to the - of the first.
With me so far?
So, when one becomes discharged, and only one, the other may still be strong enough to push current through the circuit. Of course, it goes the same way it always did, but since the dead battery is no longer helping, it becomes part of the circuit.
What this means is that the current througn it is trying to charge it, but in reverse, which is not a good idea.

Seems there was problems with those batteries anyway. Another set from the same pack just blew up in a mobile speaker i had lying around. It's put a permanent stain in my brand new chest as well.

I'll post a wee pic tommorow of the damage-sorry tho, the mousemat was making me feel ill so it had to get chucked out before my new camera arrived.

Now i gotta remember what else i put those damn batteries in...

Shiiiiit... Are they definately from the same batch?

Can't say with %100 certainty, but i don't normally go through a lot of AA's anymore. Everything is powered by Li-ion's these days...so chances are it's the same batch. I'd kinda hope so, or my luck is just sucky :(

Sorry it took so long to get access to my photos. But here's the battery stain. I don't think that's ever coming out; thank god it's cheapo Ikea furniture and not my redwood desk.

That's more than a stain. It's bleached the colour out. Is it 'real' wood or veneer? If it's real, you could probably sand the whole thing and re varnish it.

Speaking of blow-ups. My KonicaMinolta 2400W blew up yesterday.
Well, not really blew up, but a paper jam which I couldn't fix right away lead to serious consequences. It jammed up at the fuser, which is inaccessible. I pulled out what paper I could, but there was still some in there.
Having removed what I could, I figured it might be possible to run a sheet of card through it to clear it.
when I turned it on however, this (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f341/chrispollard/printer/smoke.jpg) happened.
I turned it off right away (and took the photo, the camera was right by me, luckily). I figured I really needed to get in there and clear that jam.
So, I removed part of the mechanism to allow me better access.
I extracted this lot (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f341/chrispollard/printer/burnt.jpg) but I think the damage is done (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f341/chrispollard/printer/melted.jpg).

You should be able to replace the fuser and fuser rollers. I worked in a print shop for years, and there is nothing that is not replaceable in a printer, it's just a matter of finding the parts. Go look around on eBay, you should be able to find something.

ikea is the best

You either love IKEA or hate them. My mother hates them. I hate them too but they allow me to have a nice new set of furniture, all for under £300.

The wood is pulped **** with a laminate coating. Trying to sand it will probably just destroy it; i'll just have to live with it.

xmastree, hard luck about the printer! Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't that a pretty expensive printer? Can you maybe send it away under warranty? After all, it was in the course of normal use, right?

Yes, it was about 400 quid new. I got it second hand though. I think there's no warranty left.
POS, don't buy one.

I'm actually undecided about IKEA, being a Swede I like the design, and it's cheap. but some of it is really just crap.
The material they use is some kind of low density board, usually. I tried to route some lights into a computer desk once and the whole thing collapsed into a pile of dust. Apparently the only thing holding that thing together was the laminate.

Anyway, I guess you can re-laminate the thing, but that would probably cost you more than a new desk.
