Can one put DDR2 in a board that supports DDR3? I heard the slots are physically different. Just here to confirm or deny said claims and make sure I'm buying the right parts.

DDR2 is NOT compatible with DDR3! Do not attempt as you will cause physical damage.

Yes, the slots are physically different.
That being said, I've seen a few boards with slots for both DDR2 and DDR3. However, you cannot mix and match, you must run one or the other.

Moving past that now, what do you guys recommend for a decent quality memory that's not going to cost an arm and a leg?
