After a bit of digging, I have managed to confirm that 450g is the maximum recommended weight of a CPU cooler for AMD AM2, AM2+, AM3 and intel 775 processors. I can't find a max weight for i3 i5 and i7 anywhere...

Does anyone know the max weight recommended for a cooler on LGA1156 and LGA1366 sockets?

I would imagine it's about the same - ultimately what supports the weight is the PCB, and unless the i-series uses slightly thicker PCBs, I would guess that their loading characteristics are very similar if not the same. Of course, just occurred to me that there could be differences in the bracket that the heatsink is attached to since most of them don't attach straight to the motherboard.
I just looked at Newegg, and one of their search filters for any CPU heatsink is weight. They have a break at 450g, and this includes all sockets, the LGAs too. I would say that's a good indicator that 450g is, in general, the max recommended weight. That being said, I doubt so many companies would make heavier ones if they tended to severely warp the PCBs, so using one of those is probably ok if that's what you want to do.

My current cooler is 1.7 kilos lol - I just want the information for something I'm writing

psh...research. (waves hand jedi fashion) you don't need research.... :P

I remember when the original Thermalright 120 towers came out there was a discussion on this on here or the other site... or maybe it was in CPU. I think the conclusion was that anything over 350g should have a support wire attached unless the mobo was being used flat.

It would really depend on how far from the socket the weight was distributed. If it's 2 inches tall, who cares how much it weighs...go nuts. If it's 8 inches tall and most of the weight is in those top 4-6 inches, then it needs to be limited in weight. But, if it's supported like Oneslow suggested, then go nuts.
What are you writing?

It's a secret lol - but one which will be shared pretty soon :)

just rig it to bolt up to the MBB tray. :D

My cooler is a nice 1kg TRUE, I never have had a problem with my motherboard warping yet.

And here is something to think about, take a look at the coolers that weigh less than 405 grams, then look at coolers that way more than 405 grams. The ones that weigh more are probably more likey to screw into a backplate behind the motherboard to distribute the load and the ones with less hook into a bracket or hook onto the motherboard. Just something to think about ;P
