Thanks everyone!
So here's some history on the bike. It belongs to a friend. Not sure how many miles are on it, but those fairings were actually pretty chewed up. The owner before him laid the bike down. My friend did all of the plastic and fiberglass work. I primed these with some krylon high build. I know, a regular spray primer would have been much better, but he's buying new plastic next year. So, all of what you see here will have auto air pearlized white with some blue fire coming out of the vents on the fairings. Not a lot, just some really loose unrefined licks. The gas tank, nose cone, and half of the tail piece are all getting pearlized blue; the other half of the tail piece will be white. Unfortunately, I don't have any before pictures.. my friend started sanding and glassing before I could get any. He's a little anxious, but he's gonna check with the guy he bought it from and see if he has any.
Anyway, that's the plans. Wish me luck, this will be my first ever base coat and graphics.
Oh yeah.. the gas tank was repaired and prepped at a body shop. It was dented all over. I'll have pictures of it up on Friday. That's when I'm shooting the blue on it.
Billy - I buy from tcpglobal.com. You can check on auto air's site (http://www.autoaircolors.com) and see if there are any dealers close to you. The dealer that's close to me (closer to work actually) isn't open when I'm in that area. I started on a HF special. It's actually not a bad brush to get going with. It's all about trigger control and paint reduction.

Me too my friend stripped it down and neglected to take pictures. Suffice it to say though.. It was ugly. Real ugly.

Skulls? Flames? Chaos and Anarchy?
/sub and a +rep to boot.
Pearl white and pearl blue. The fairings are going white with some really loose blue fire. I'm hoping to have some pictures of the bike in it's current state tomorrow. This will give you guys an idea of how bad the plastic is and how bad those fairings were. I'll have to take pictures of the under side so you can see the glass patches.
So, I bought this (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=47016) yesterday. My first HVLP. It's not a bad little gun.
I got some sealer white sprayed on one of the fairings last night, and the gas tank is sitting in my garage sanded and ready for sealer and blue. I think it's gonna be too cold to spray today though. We went from a high of 87 this week to possible snow showers today. The pictures my buddy took are all on his phone. I gotta bluetooth them to my computer and I'll get them posted.

Looking good, my buddy layed his GSXR down 4 yrs ago and we've been working on it little by little...... you have now motivated me to motivate him and get more stuff done!
Thanks Panda. It's a lot of work, but it's gonna look sick in the end.
It was too cold to do much of anything today. I had a heater in the garage, but when I sprayed the sealer on the gas tank, a little got messed up. That's all sanded and ready for better weather tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for sealer and blue pearl! We're ordering the rest of the sealer and the pearl white next Friday. It looks like probably mid May before this project is wrapped.

Looks great. Personally I think it looks awesome with no fairings though. :D
Up until now, I had only been taking pictures with my iPhone. Here's some pictures I took with my good camera of the gas tank in the sun. I don't like the texture on the surface. That was caused by not having the gun dialed in, and the paint not atomizing properly when I sprayed the sealer. My friend likes it, so I didn't sand it back down to primer. I think it's gonna look great under some clear.

The color's great, although I'm with you on wanting to sand her back down.
So Here where we stand. All of the pieces in sealer white are getting sanded smooth and prepped for the next coat (ordering more tonight). I want them to be as close to perfectly smooth as possible. I'll probably put two more coats of sealer on before the pearl white. I sprayed 3 light coats of over reduced Pearl blue on the tank last night. We also decided that the tank is too big to leave blank. Here's a test and a teaser of what's gonna go on it.
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f186/sgtm_usmc/e6ab85ac.jpg
About the rims. There are plans to do something to them. It's just up in the air as to what. My buddy is eager to ride the bike this season so rim mods will probably be this winter.

Oooh, that would look sweet. :D
We got some work done last night. Actually, more work has been done on the garage itself than anything the last few days. Arranging things so they aren't in the way, sweeping the floor, got some new lights hung, sound system hung and wired. We did get to work on the front end last night though, and we also sanded all of the pieces I sprayed sealer on smooth and prepped them for another coat when the new order gets here (Fedex says April 20th).

This bike is going to be awesome know SgtM is working on it. Also it's always better to work on projects if your workspace is clean & organized.
Well, since I can't spray any sealer or pearl white, I decided to do some work on the tank.

Yeah, water in a beer glass. I know I know..
Anyway, that's all the fire that's gonna go on the tank. What's really cool about it is I set it all back with the pearl so depending on the angle you're looking at it is how much you see. I have a surprise too, but that will be revealed later.

Nice ghosting! That should look killer in the sun after it's cleared.
Thanks. All I did there was spray the skull with white, and then buried it under the blue pearl. The way they react with the light is what's giving that effect. It's gonna be interesting to see this under clear.
The pearl white and sealer came in today. I got everything sprayed with sealer that wasn't already, and the whole thing is now ready for color. I might spray some tomorrow; Friday definitely.
Here's some shots of the white. The goal is to drop everything off for clear on Monday.

Everything is back from clear. Time to colorsand and do the graphics on the fairings, and then back to clear on Friday (hopefully). I don't have enough time to get pictures uploaded and posted tonight, but it looks awesome! Oh, and BTW.. if anyone ever invites you into a booth while spraying clear and you don't have a mask.. turn them down. I lasted maybe 30 seconds before the fumes were too much. That stuff is just plain nasty!
Here's a couple of quick shots after 2 coats of clear. These are gonna get sanded and then back for another 2 coats.

Agreed. Great job on the paint job! The wheels definitely need a change though. ;) And I think a touch of chrome (or maybe just polishing, idk) on the muffler would work wonders.
Yeah, the wheels are definitely an eyesore, but my buddy didn't break it down enough to change anything on them this time. That muffler actually needs to be replaced. The bike was layed down on that side (hence all the fiberglass work), and the muffler got pretty chewed up. So much so that we had to rivet part of it back together. He cleaned it up as best as he could with some sandpaper and a wire wheel until he can afford a new one ($400). You can kinda see some of the damage in this picture.
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f186/sgtm_usmc/SDC10625.jpg
I know this one is old, but it's getting repainted. Here's the start. The wheels are finally getting changed this time! They're getting a white powder coat.

So how long does it take to get them skills? The work.looks fantastic
Thank you. It all depends on how much you practice really. I've been fortunate, and had some really good teachers. Not to mention helping Tony run TheAirbrushForum, I get to pick up a lot of good info from other people.
Here's the front fender.

Smokin Hot!
1/3 of the seat section. I'm hoping to have this thing done and cleared next week.

Detail shot to show how small some of the lines are.

Working on a skull for the tank. I cleared some parts today. Still have to cut and buff them. Some metallic white coarse for the Suzuki letters.

cannot wait to see this come together. That's some mighty fine work and its come a long way since the start of the project.
Thanks! I airbrushed the gas tank yesterday, and cleared it this morning. Pictures after it's assembled!

Can't wait!
BTW: I think I have found the paint I want to use on my bike. Can you image the turn signals and stop light as part of the paint?:

I know. I saw this last night and my head was spinning with so many ideas it took me a while to get to sleep.
My motorcycle is only one idea. Can you imagine computer cases painted with this? Depending on how you have to mask and add the voltage wires, you could come up with some pretty interesting designs. Makes me want to take an airbrush class just so I can get certified to use their paint...
I contacted them and one of the companies I use for custom computer chassis to see if I can get one of my vendor certified. I can see custom glowing logo's on the front of a 1U chassis in a rack...
Like I said I have tons of ideas now...
I'll be sending an email soon.
The tank is in for its second round of clear. First coat is flashing right now.

Point out your background in computer modding and show them the work you have done with an airbrush and I think they would be happy to have you licensed to do their work.
BTW: I think part of the licensing program includes techniques on hooking up power to the paint properly. I am sure there are lots of ways top make it happen.
Can't wait to see the final product here...
Thanks, Terry.
The GSXR tank was picked up this morning. He said he's hoping to have it on the road next weekend. HUH????? Next weekend?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? I thought he was done with everything else and just needed the tank!
So I guess he's waiting on new fuel lines, but he took a minute to put the tank on. Crappy cell phone pictures, but better pictures and HD video once it's on the road.
