My rooms is fairly big i have storage space under my table and under my bed and i want to make it in to my workshop sort of thing but i am on a very low budget about 25-30pounds and i need to have storage for spare parts, storage for nuts bolts cabling stuff liek that and somewhere i can put my power tools and my big tools such as hammer drill etc if you have any ideas or sites then post them please

Seperation blinds is a good way to start. Sure you'll be halfing your room but that's the price of this project. If you have rug, I suggest getting a large sheet of linoleum to put on the workshop side so that when screws, bits, metal particles, and such fall on the floor... well it'll be less of a hassle. Oh and good ventilation is key. As far as storage, large bins are cheep and you can get them at your local post office in different sizes. A schematic of your room or quick drawn blueprint would really help in this case.

Do u mean like windows or vents???

windows is good if they are large enough. If you have the ability to put a vent then hey why not. Like you said it's up to your budget.
I prefer vents because one, you can place it in whatever direction you want the air to go as far as intake or out, and two, sometimes all it takes is a little breeze to ruin a masterpiece. If not vents, then windows should do just fine.

Pics would help a great deal8).

well, a workshop can be anywhere. Like my walkin closet. Check out my Project Outpost 948 (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1898) to see how I did mine.

I would recommend getting a vice. Its great to hold things like panels verticle if your short on space. Also since its in your room, a shop vac is a must to clean any dust and keep it from getting in your bed too much. And if your planning on building a work table as I did be sure its very sturdy, you don't want the table moving while your cutting.

you need a fridge aswell because you can store drinks for when you are working because i find i get a dry throat when i were those mask thingies also get snacks so when you are working on something which you cant leave for more than a second you can get some food !!!!!!! also you should get some sound proofing because its ok if you have power tools in your shed or garage but when your in your room its right next to a wall and you will be able to hear the sound throughout the house and your neighbours will complain :)

;) More UK modders...... nice.

tecguy - Wickes (http://www.wickes.co.uk) have a 2m kitchen worktop for £13.99 I think. Got a couple to make work surfaces in my garage.
Few pieces of wood for the legs and bobs your uncle, nice sturdy workbench.
Plus with it being for the kitchen, it has a nice plastic finish. Even think you get a choice of colours. ;)

Best price I found, plus Wickes are all over the country, so there should be one close.

Where abouts in London you live?

I used to live in SW15 (Putney and Fulham), but now I'm out in the sticks.

Well if you're going real low budget here's a few ideas.
- peanut butter jars (clear plastic with wide tops)
- Deli food containers are clear and pretty tough.
- Fuji film contaniers are also clear

For a cheap work bench you could start with an old door and some saw horses.
you might want to keep an eye out for big appliance boxes, like dishwashers, refrigerators. You could set one up to do your sawing, drilling and sanding over/in. It should help contain the mess.

Good call, Cevinzol. Another good container are baby food jars - great for small screws and other bits.

Plus, strained peas! Mmmmmm! :p

coffee cans or jelly jars, everyone has em (at least the jars...) and its not like you do anything with them besides throw them away afterwards.

If you have no budget.
- save your lunch money (thats what I did to pay my ISP way back in the dark ages).
- check garage sales, antique malls and auctions.
lots of people won't look at at tool unless its all shiny chrome ala sears craftsman. Some of the best tools will look rusty because they are made of high carbon steel. You can get them cheap or free and with a little work you have a tool.
I have tons of tools some over 100 years old that work just fine.
Collecting tools is a life time persuit.

What's the toothbrush for?

A coping saw is cheap. You should be able to afford one and it can cut metal, wood, pretty much everything: it has a large brace so you can get it in deep and cut thick metal, unlike a hacksaw, which is pretty useless for cutting any metal thicker than a 1/2 inch pipe.

I used it to get into those difficult corners.

Might I suggest a toolbox full of screws. Anyone who has a workshop has a tonne of screws and such everywhere.

the toothbrush is for cleaning off dut. the knife is dull and I have no lunch money i have crappy lunch tickets cause the military sucks.

DaveW
04-19-2006, 07:10 AM
You're going to have a hard time working with that, but surely you can borrow some tools, being on a military base? You must have some mechanics around who'll have some basic tools you can use, right?

Ask around, i borrowed a lot of my tools.

You have the two most important tools right there. WD40 and duct tape.

If it doesn't move and it should, use WD40
If it moves and it shouldn't use duct tape.

For storage, I remember my dad used to have a bunch of jars with the lids screwed to the underside of a shelf. The jars were then screwed into the lids.
A great space saving idea.

if your parent(s) are in the millitary they should have some extra coin. i know the army doesnt pay good but it doesnt pay bad either. I like the borrowing tools comment. If it wasnt for my old neighbor 2 doors down i wouldnt have been able to repair anything. He's a steel fabricator and had the most tools ive ever seen. I borrowed tools from him for 6-7 years. Find yourself a good neighbor like that and RETURN THE TOOLS AFTER and they'll keep lending them to you.

I stole some stuff when i was a kid. i stole what i needed and used my money for what i wanted... not a good choice, got me 6mo probation and 20hrs community service at 13yrs old. I've since learned that im not very good at stealing and dont do it any more. I do know sevral people who are good and continue to do it.

[Im not saying to do that but just telling how i got my stuff when i was your age]
