So I decided to give myself an early birthday present in a Savage Arms 17 HMR heavy barrel type of way. I love, love, love this thing. I was trying to decide between a 10/22 and a .17 HMR since about the time someone stole my marlin 22 lr. This thing is surprisingly easy to hold even in the heavy barrel variety, whisper quiet and deadly accurate just ask the dandelion heads I was shooting at 50 yards. Also for you naysayers that say I should use a 22 here you go http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wc37CuVgR2g.
Now please I am not trying to start an argument over gun laws and gun control I do not want to hear it and I am just showing off my new toy.
...::::UPDATE::::...
Here she is scope and bipod all in its prettiness haha.

Nice work man! I also have a 17 HMR and love it to pieces! Also bought a Mossberg .308. although they typically aren't renowned for making the best rifles, i still love it the most out of all my guns! It's probably the 260 dollar Nikon scope that makes me so amorous though! lol

I prefer the bolt only because I do all my target practice in prone position. I shoot long range 200 yards +. In prone the lever just gets in the way and you have to move your head and arm and totally loose the target in the process. However. For hunting I do prefer the lever!

I almost picked up a .17 from the gunshow last year for plinking but decided not to because range fees are outrageous here in San Diego and being California, there isn't anywhere to shoot besides ranges or the desert. :(

I live on 101.5 acres with state forests and corn fields for neighbors so I have pretty free reign on where I can shoot. There is a gun show this weekend hopefully I can either pick up a scope or a pac-lite upper and barrel for my MKII.

Ruger Mini 14 is what I dream about at night, also the remington 700 vtr is extremely nice however carries a heavy price tag. Also still on the search for the almighty Springfield that the marine corps used forever, I believe it was a modified m14 but I wouldn't swear to it. Grandpa told me about it all the time, one of the few times he ever bragged about being a Marine was about how good of a rifleman they made him.

that's how my old man is. Dosen't have a single nice thing to say about the corps, except how they made him such an excellent shot. And he is. That old man cant hear a damn thing and can score a painted paper plate from 300 yards. Really impressive. I hope i'm as good as him someday. I keep practicing, but target shooting with a 308 will take a toll on your wallet! lol

Corps treated my grandpa right, he just wasn't one to be big headed about it. He taught me when I was young and I would like to say when I kept in practice I was as good as an 8 year old could be, but he also was the first to show me that a gun is a thing to be respected. I was about 5 when he let me shoot his broom handle luger he brought home from the war and after I picked myself up off the ground I gave it back to him and ran home and never wanted to touch a gun again. As far as target shooting with a 308 I will pass as I have a bad habit of forgetting ear protection.

haha, my dad did his six week's basic training in the marines and, in his own words, decided 'f**k this!'

I have that same model except mine has the walnut stock and blued barrel. I got it the week they were released. I was in the shop when the delivery came in. I bought it before the shop owner even opened the box. Mine has the match trigger option they offered on the early models. I have floated the barrel and adjusted the trigger pull down to just under 1lb. If I match the ammo groups by weight I can hold 1/2" groups at 100 yards on a windless day.

Airguns would be a good consideration in your type of situation.
my airgun shoots 1,335fps depending on the ammo and tempature, definantly as loud as my .22 rifle is.
it'll punch holes in a microwave. so thats pretty decent for a 4.5mm powered by pneumatics.

and that rifle is the lower midrange for airguns.

Ruger makes a very good air gun that has been on sale at least here locally for right at 100 samolians or so. Want to say its awful close to 1350 fps although i think it is advertised at 1000 fps. Back to my 17 it is black composite on blued barrel and the new ACCUtrigger which i am in love with. Going to break down and pay someone to bore sight the rifle after i check out the gun show this weekend to see if I cant find a BSA sweet 17. Oops btw that ruger is the Air Hawk.

Oooh, niiice. That's the one problem with living around major cities...nowhere I could buy a sizable piece of land (10+ acres) even if I did have the money. :(

It helps that its setup in a trust from when grandpa owns it and currently my mom and uncle are the owners so I just soak up all the goodness, I will pay for it later haha.

Could save some serious cash and just get this and sight it in yourself

Use that for hunting myself, and its pretty much how everyone else sets up scopes w/o firing a shot.
Basically its a reverse scope with a chart on it you look into that lets you sight the scope or sights in. works awesome. 40-70$ depending where you shop.
lets you almost instantly adjust for distance without having to guess, or fire off any shots. which is handy when there is a deer at 250m and your set for 100m :P

Local shop wants 2 bucks to bore sight my scope so I am going to have to say i dont see myself sighting in 30 scopes in a long time. This will probably be my last purchase until i save up enough for a 223, so I appreciate the link and will keep it in mind but right now doesnt make sense.
