Drivers are installed yet nothing wants to work with it despite it supposedly being backwards compatible with 2.0. It blue screened when I plugged a usb capture card into it and it wont boot my external hdd. The lights come on and the drive just ticks so I quickly unplugged it.

The drive ticking sounds like its not getting enough power to start.

Usually the drive will show a red light when its not getting enough power but both lights were on. It's in a new case now and the case only supports a single usb plug instead of the Y adapters.

I'll try my big external and see if it works.

Working with the powered external so I guess it was a power issue with the mini drive. +rep

That interesting that there isn't enough power looks lilke someone is not meeting the USB standards.

I've had that happen several times with laptop add-in USB cards not providing enough power to drive a USB-powered drive. I think there are two USB standards, one for 'high power' ports that can power peripherals, and one for 'low power' ports that can't.
