you know, that reminds me of when I had a maxtor 320GB drive die on me about a year ago (that was the final push that motivated me to get an SSD) - except it didn't sound like any of those noises. If you've seen The Shining, remember the high-pitched violins going weee-weeee-weee? That's the sound my drive suddenly started making, except it was at 3am, and it was LOUD.
I should add that the drive was almost exactly 5 years old...
