I remember the days of playing Doom, it was my first FPS. When Doom 3 came out I was annoyed because it got waaaay to dark and boring. I really want to play Doom again, maybe number 2, but I have a Vista 64 bit PC.
If I buy it, will it play OK? I don't want it to be so old that it messes up my display settings down to 16-bit. Is there an more updated version that will play OK? Like a Game of the Year version or something?

I haven't tried it, but on searching it seems you'll need to download a dll that isn't included with vista, and then just run it in compatibility mode for XP SP2.
Hopefully this will be some help. (http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/How_to_download_and_run_Doom) as I haven't tried it myself.
Or, if you have to buy a new copy anyways, there's always Steam.

Or, the Doom super pack:

Well I've found the built in compatibility modes to work well for most old school games I play on my Win 7 64bit rig. Also considering that DOOM 1 & 2 were originally for DOS there is an excellent emulator called DOSBox which works well for playing DOS games on newer systems and is available for free. Between those two methods I generally haven't had much of an issue getting old school games to run. You might want to play windowed mode (I think DOSBox does that by default) as most DOS systems didn't have bigger than 800x600 displays.
If you want to see how it runs I believe you can still find the shareware versions of DOOM online and you can see how well it runs using the two methods I mentioned before.
