Apparently AMD is going to appearing in more laptops (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100507/tc_nm/us_amd_back_to_school)? I didn't know there was a deficiency....

I haven't seen AMD in MOST products in quite a long time. It's like a 1/12 ratio these days. They're ****ed. They say competition is a good thing... Yet here we have Atom and Core series processors with no real competition. They might as well keep focusing on GPU's. They're actually pretty good at that. Give CPU's to Intel and take the GPU market and watch nVidia become the AMD of the processor world.

Except some of us cant afford intels overpriced processors when AMD offers something that performs extremely well for half the price of intel's. So ill stick with my $150 quad core.... as opposed to intels $250 - $300 [/rant]

this.
AMD will bounce back. I have faith!
but I do have to say, Intel has AMD's ass kicked when it comes to laptops. My T6500 sips battery life. I seriously can get at least 3 hours out of my 6 cell battery. not bad for a 15.6" laptop.

Probably because AMD notebook run hot as hell.
I wonder who will jump on the Graphene concept first.

Can't =/= Don't want to.
Intel does cost more*, sure. But look where that money goes? Better processors spec for spec, regular updates for newer and better processors and months ahead of the competition. Spread that out over years and that's a lot more progress to be had than otherwise.
I think I've made my point clear in why I support Intel.
*They actually technically don't cost more. They cost about right. Hint why the cheaper AMD's aren't as good, because they make an improper amount for their processors and thus don't have the proper funds to stay truly relevant. I like my progress of technology faster than not, thanks.

i agree that intel makes a faster product, however for a college guy on a tight budget, i would rather get a top of the line amd proc. than a 2 or 3 gen old intel proc for the same $$... if i was able to get an i7 i would, but for the price to performance they cant be beaten... so to stop any mud schlinging, each processor company has its own spot in the market, and both make an excellent product. the intels are faster in the benchmarks, but in real world performance amd is no slouch either. Now i need to stop before i start a fanboy war \x_x/
Hmm, I wonder if this is talking about the Neo platform. I would love to see that get out there more.. Power requirements a little higher than the Atom, but power about equivalent to a core 2 mono...and cheap! I think they could do wonders for the sub-notebook (not netbook) market if more manufacturers get on board with them.

Agreed. ...one last note though.. :whistler:
I'll admit that Intel makes more powerful chips..for a price...but I think we've been in a situation for a year or two now where the power available in components is rocketing past what 90%+ of the market actually needs, which I think has rather plateaued. Sure, more power is always good, but if you're not going to use that power... /shrugs Case in point, my system is comprised of components a good 2+ years old, and on about the highest resolution 99% of users are going to see (2048x1152), I can still push every new game I've found to their limits. And these components weren't top of the line 2 years ago either!

I was just having a similar conversation with our IT guy. We were laughing at the people who want the best CPU's, best GPU's, best memory and mobo's then use the system mainly for web browsing or writing email and only play solitaire or WoW...
I would bet that 80% of the quad core cpu's in use RARELY see over 80% on one core and at least 2 of the cores will be idle for their entire life (not counting servers of course).

[reply to Airbozo] Our new guy here wants to buy a GTX295.. so he can play WoW. I told him that it was a waste of money, and that he wont notice any difference playing WoW, since he's already running a GT260. [/reply to Airbozo]
As for the AMDs in laptops, the few that have come through here were running Nvidia chipsets in HP DV laptops, and they were ALL failed.

Sounds like a great tech you guys hired on there Luke if he's that retarded. lol

Well, he's not a tech. ;) He knows some stuff, he's just one of those guys who needs to have the latest and greatest of everything, it's more for bragging rights than anything else. He calls it "futureproofing" so that he's prepared in case something awesome comes out and wants to play it.
I told him he should just get 3 x 480's, and now he's seriously considering THAT.
He's only part time.. he works oilpatch, so he's got $$$$. :D

Well, he's kinda right. Let's say the new TES game comes out within the next couple years, then he'll be able to play it without having to upgrade and he'll be able to play it on higher settings than what he currently has.
That's how I look at things. I may not need it at this very moment, but if I buy something powerful now I'll A) Never have a need more power problem and B) I may benefit from that extra power sometime the road, thus saving myself from needing to upgrade.
That and who doesn't like to gloat? :p

if i had the money i would agree with future proofing..
but alas i dont
and as for AMDs in laptops.. everysingle one ive used with an AMD inside has had problems staying alive.. period.. constantly overheatings.. and then just randomly dying... gotta love new tech eh?

My stocks tell me AMD is soaring....:lick:
As for the comeback in the mobile processor market I have no idea.
