So, some of you may remember my adventures with the Comcast banhammer (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22715). Or, rather, what I thought was the Comcast banhammer...

As it turns out, the first time you go over the limit, they give you a phone call telling that this happened, and not to do it again. Well, that or they can't reach you on your phone so they turn off your service until you call them. Now, that's all good, whatever, I can live with that. What happens next is the problem.

The second time you go over the limit...you get banned from Comcast's network for a year! -_^

Now, before you tell me it's my fault, I'll say...ok, it is.. I put in a limiter to cap my torrent uploads at 100GB/mo, but unfortunately my math was off, as I found out last night. Instead of 30kBps (100GB/mo), I had it set to 300kBps (1TB/mo). ..I'm guessing that's what put me over... :whistler:

So, yeah, no warning, no "if you go over again you get banned for a year", not even any notice that my account got deleted, just...no service. I figured I just had to call them up again and get it turned back on...imagine my surprise when I find out that my account is disabled for a year. -_^

Comcast? I am not amused. -_-

On that note, looks like I'll be getting internet at home by tethering off my phone for a while (0.9Mbps up, 0.7Mbps down..yay 3G! :D ). Oh, what's that? T-Mobile doesn't have a transfer limit and doesn't care if I tether? Oh, that's awesome. Too bad an actual ISP couldn't do the same for me...

So tomorrow I'll be mailing off my Comcast modem to one of their distribution centers, and in a week or two I should be getting a check from them, crediting me the balance on my account, and that will be the last of my interactions with Comcast.

Ever.

That's right, congratulations Comcast! You have now permanently lost a paying customer. I will never buy service from Comcast ever again, anywhere, and I will never advise any of my friends to buy their service ever again. I know plenty of people who are unhappy with Comast's service but still keep it because it's faster than DSL and they can't get FiOS. Yesterday I was one of those people. Not anymore. I hereby solemnly swear that Comcast will never again get a single cent of my money, and I will do my best to steer others away from them as well.

Comcast isn't available where I live, but if it ever is, I now know not to use them.

Is comcast the only ISP in your area? I'd rather go pick up a dozen AOL disks than tether off of my G1. I had to do that for about a week and I definitely found myself outside more :P ....which can be a bad thing if you don't have $ because I wasted a lot of gas bored-driving.

Well, I could get Verizon DSL, but there I run into another problem. All Verizon DSL plans require a 1 year contract, but I'm planning on moving in August (3 months). Breaking that contract will result in an early termination fee of 'up to $120'. I might call them tomorrow to see what can be done about that though. For now though, I'm actually doing ok tethered on my N900. ...I might feel differently after a week, but for now I'm ok. Since I happen to get full reception in my apartment, I'm actually getting (relatively) ok speeds. Enough that it's almost as fast download as the lowest tier of Verizon DSL (and the upload is faster):

what a stupid company.... instead of banning paying customers why not just charge more money at a higher rate...

I forgot to check with Centurylink to see if they have any caps on the internet. I just changed from my Charter 5mbps to DSL 10mbps for about the same. I was getting tired of dealing with outages that never happened in my area and my internet being down was because of my home network.

FairPoint may be a miserable company - basically, Verizon sold us off - and our 1.5Mbit/384Kbit plan is no longer a good deal at $30, but we're afraid that if we upgrade to a larger plan, they'll manage to screw up somehow, and further, our upload speeds wouldn't increase significantly (the real problem).

It's dead reliable right now, though, and there aren't any caps, so we're stickin' with 'em and encouraging everyone else to do the same.

yup, i think they still do it. after 25 gb's going over (they charged a dollar a gb i think) it was unlimited for the rest of the month.

Huh, so it's really more like a $25 premium for high-traffic users? Interesting.

well, down here we've no FiOS, so we're all stuck in the dsl land... I'm using a cable connection, crappy 2M/512K..but for the price, is some of the best I can get...
Hope you solve you ISP problems when you move... Good luck!!

Well, I was looking over Verizon's website again today, and realized that they have a month-to-month option for their DSL service! :D Kinda stupid that they keep it hidden like that, but whatever, I can deal... So, I just placed the order, so tomorrow I should get an email saying when I get hooked up! w00tz!

$50/mo for 3Mbps/768kbps service kinda sucks, but it's better than tethering and there's no transfer limit. My faithful N900 has been a good, solid provider of internets while I have been without a landline, but...it is a bit slow...especially since I was used to 30Mbps/7Mbps...

Hahaha, well, it depends who you compare us to. A lot of places in Europe and east Asia a 30Mbps/7Mbps 60USD/mo line near a major city is utter crap.

The higher the population density the cheaper it is.

I am grateful I don't have to live in a shoe box sized flat.

Having a big house is worth the trade off for an ADSL2+ connection. At least I get 10/1 mbps. For $49.50 USD.

Ok, I'm hoping I'm missing something here, but, well, ok, first some back story...

So, what Verizon does for DSL is they mail you the modem/etc, and then at some point turn on service to your location. Ok, fine, whatever, that's cool. I'd rather that than waste half my day and $30 so that the service guy can come and plug in the modem.. -_^

Now here's the problem. I placed the order for my service on Monday (May 24th) late at night. I got my modem in the mail yesterday. My service isn't going to be enabled until June 3rd. I figured that this was just an estimated date, and it was just to make sure that I got the modem before they turned it on. Apparently not! I called them this morning, and apparently no, they can't turn on my service any earlier, sorry, they're swamped. Now, I confirmed that this is done entirely remotely. Nobody has to come out to my location, or any location, and physically plug anything in. As far as I can tell, somebody at their central location just has to click a button or throw a switch, and, poof, I have service. So why do I have to wait a week? How long does it take for them to push that button? My account is already set up, as far as I can tell, my billing is already set up...what's the problem?

Has anyone ever worked for Verizon or another DSL ISP who might know what's going on here? Like I said, I'm hoping I'm missing something. Never having worked in that industry, I'm sure there's plenty going on that I don't know about, but from where I'm sitting it seems like somebody just can't be bothered to flip that switch until their calendar tells them to.

It's not as simple as you think, the line may have to be connected to the exchange, or they have a huge backlog of problems and need to process them before adding the codes to activate your port.

Yep .. there is alot more involved then it sounds like. First of all .. is Verizon the one that owns the Telephone lines in your area, or the primary telecom? Most likely its not, its either ATT or a local telecom. So Verizon first has to coordinate with them to patch your line over to the LEC so they can have access to the line. Once they have have access to the line they have to then route it through the DSLAM. Once the line is connected to the DSLAM the ISP (Verizon) then has to configure all the routing and associate it to an account that needs to be created or updated. Meanwhile all this needs to be scheduled and tracked to ensure if a problem arises they can rapidly track it to make sure to minimize any outages that may occur. Any slip up in this process can bring down a whole area. By sticking to a schedule all the proper departments and partners know what is going to happen, what was done, and when it was done, so in the event of a problem they can track exactly what happened and when. With a company like Verizon that processes thousands of activations a day, it takes alot of coordination.

Seven business days is not too bad of a time frame to be honest. If you order a DS3 from ATT there is a 45 day lead time, and if you think about it, the quicker they get those installed the more revenue they make.

Huh, interesting. It actually didn't occur to me who owns the line, I just assumed it was Verizon since they're the only ones who offer any kind of service on them in this area, but I guess that's more likely one of the old 'Ma Bell' companies. Bah! Stupid paperwork. :P

Oh well, I guess I'll just have to limp along on my phone for another week. :(

Eh, I knock it, but tbh it's been really nice to have something to fall back on through all this crap.
