View Full Version : I am Sick of Seeing Macs. . . . .!

It seems like every show and every commercial I see there's a Mac. Every time I watch the news the broadcasters have Macs. Even in (non PC) magazines there's always ads with pics of Macs in the background.
Apple has such a tiny share of the market yet their computers are there. Is this the secret of great advertising? I bet these people actually believe that Macs have 1/2 the market, when they only have a tiny fraction.:devious:

Apple spends a lot of money promoting their crap as "the artist's choice." They also give them to journalists a lot so they will give good reviews. They have basically bought most of the press.
I'm a PC, running Linux. I'm also a game designer/artist. Take that, Mac.

Avertising is key. PC's don't advertise much because they're everywhere. Go to any store that sells computers besides the apple store and there ya go. They promote their products as the classy alternative which is how they get so much money for their machines. Are they worth the price? Rarely, but neither are 90% of designer items yet people pay the premium because of how the brand is perceived.
Is it working for Apple? Seems like it. I'd be willing to bet the majority of female celebs own a Mac because it's the trendy thing to do.

This is now illegal in the united states (the part about journalists giving good word because it's free)

If they have no proof of purchase. From what I've heard, it's worked very well so far.

I have a Mac mini.. ethernet issues aside, I'm pretty happy with it.
I'm currently looking for a cheapo Macbook or Macbook Pro, as well as a newer iMac. I've been getting into servicing Macs, since there's no support out there other than driving 1hr+ to a major center.

This reminds of the post about the Apple dating site. They're trying to be trendy and exclusive (even trying to get their customers to date each other - kinda creepy).
Apple's whole advertising campaign seems to me like they are attempting to tell the world they are better than everyone else. While some people prefer Macs, it doesn't mean everybody does. Different people have different preferences, and I'm sick of advertising in general.

Agreed. I will probably never buy a Mac simply because I don't really like them. Sure, they're pretty and well built, but unless you catch them at just the right time the hardware is outdated, there's still a decent price premium (though it is much less than it used to be), the whole environment is locked down like nobody's business, and besides, I prefer Thinkpads and custom built desktops/servers, preferably running Linux. :P
Oh, and their advertising campaigns in the last couple years have really had the opposite affect of me, making me want to not buy any of their products...

im one of those strange people (seemingly rare) who likes windows and mac, (and linux but i dont have $$ to build a home server ATM). I love the mac portables, mainly because they nailed the track pad in my opinion... but i agree, for desktops i still love to dig into a pc and build what i want.

This sounds a lot like many of the people at my school. I swear, 90% of them are complete Apple fanboys. We were having a discussion about monopolies in my AM history class, and someone actually though that apple basically had a monopoly in the computer world. I actually did a double facepalm.

This is what gets me.
"The IPhone doesn't need 3G, MMS or copy/paste!!"
1 year later..
"The new IPhone 3G, with MMS and copy/paste!"
I find that sort of sales pactice disgusting. And paying EXTRA for it too because of the branding, whilst they're deliberately selling a crippled device?!

All cellphones are crippled devices. With the amount of technology out these days, 5-8MP cameras should be standard.
They balance each release with major pros/cons to make consumers always wanting more. If they released a phone with all the goodies in one package, users would be content with their purchase for way too long.
Could you imagine an "iphone" with a physical keyboard (like the HTC G1) while keeping the slim figure, large screen/minimal bezel. An 8MP camera with flash/zoom, 30fps camcorder, java, full HTTP browser, running android or windows on any mobile service, a very high quality speaker phone, expandable memory up to 32GBs, multitouch, wireless tethering, GPS, bluetooth, 3.5mm/2.5mm jacks and more? Would you care about another phone for the next 5 years? I wouldn't. lol

I won't buy a mac cause I can buy a PC with double the stats for 1/2 the price

Well, let's see...
physical keyboard : check
slim figure : 18mm with a physical keyboard..I'm gonna say check
large screen/minimal bezel : 3.5" 800x480 screen. There is a bit of a bezel though.
8MP camera with flash/zoom : 5MP camera with flash and digital zoom
30fps camcorder : 25fps camcorder
java : check
full HTTP browser : check
running android or windows : Maemo 5, later to be Meego. I wouldn't be surprised if Android gets ported to it at some point
any mobile service : any carrier operating on:
* Quad-band GSM EDGE 850/900/1800/1900
* WCDMA 900/1700/2100 MHz
very high quality speaker phone : check
expandable memory up to 32GBs : double check 32GB onboard memory, plus a Micro SDHC slot
multitouch : nope, sorry :(
wireless tethering : check over bluetooth, wifi (experimental), IR, and USB (not wireless, but it is tethering)
GPS : check
bluetooth : check
3.5mm jack : check
more : check
- Composite video/audio out (with adapter)
- FM reciever
- FM broadcaster
- Flash support
- Real Xterm
- Crazy easy root access (open the pre-installed Xterm application and type 'root')
Yup, I'd say the Nokia N900 comes pretty damn close. :D

ya, I almost picked up an N900 but I didn't like the keyboard or the OS so I stuck with my G1. It came so close though.

you just described a htc incredible, with a keyboard of course. My Desire is a similar spec, but with a 5mp camera and a not-brilliant speakerphone.
It's one of the best things I've ever owned, glad I got it on a contract though, RRP is £500!

the main downside to the iphone/ipad/ipod touch is apple has not and will not include flash support. according to Steve Jobs flash is too open and useable (I'm paraphrasing lol). Basically they say it's too buggy, and tht it violates the TOS because it allows outside developers to make programs that don't have to go through apple. Complete BS to me

FYI my computer really is powered from the souls of babies. what do you think that red switch on the back is for? switches between 110v AC and baby souls.

Tell me about it...no carrier is sponsoring the N900, so I ended up spending $550 on it shortly after release. :dead:

OH GOD! Between all the new hybrids made in the last few years and Apple's ever increasing market share (well, ~4% last I checked, but still, growing), we could very well have a major ecological disaster brewing!

I ended up quitting my contract and number, and setting up a new contrat on the same account through a reseller?!
T-Mobile direct - £25 per month for 24 months + £100 up front = £600 total
Reseller - £25 per month for 18 months, FREE = £450 total
Bear in mind I already have two contracts on the same account and that was the SPECIAL deal T-Mo offered me on an upgrade, should have cost £30 pm and £129 up front (£849 total?!)
I'm happy to pay for what I'm getting, but not to be ripped off. Costs me £3pm on my house insurance, T-Mo wanted £7pm... I could go on...

jajaja..... i remember the time when the Macs ruled the graphic market, back then (s**t, back when they DO make beige computers), the PCs still run DOS. In fact I remember that my first computer EVER was a classic. But, alas, as thegreatsatan, I'm sick tired that everywhere you look, there's a mac sitting on the desk.
Fact is, nowadays, if you have a intel powered PC, you can buy a OSX install disc and live "the mac experience" or feel that you are part of that snobbish, elitist group of computer users...
PS. The last sentence was aimed to the majority of mac owners. not to anyone in particular. And absolutely NOT to any member of this forum :D
