I finally got an old CPU sink cut... Now, I needed a way to apply it to my chips. My friend using gasket maker, specifically, Permatex Red High Temp RTV Silicone. I want to know if this can actually work, and how the heck to I keep my heatsinks on?

I didn't try it on my card that's in now, instead, I tried it on my old MX420 card. I ripped apart, yet another, 486 system and pulled out the heatsink. I stuck it on and, about 10 minutes later, it held together pretty good. But it came off when I pulled it off, haha. The tube says to let it sit for 24 hrs (!!!), but I got impatient. So, when it came off, the chips were the same. No eating, no discoloration, NOTHING!! So, I wondering if you guys think its weird, or if I shuold go ahead and stick it on my card running now.

This stuff has been holding together pretty good! It's been 5+ hrs since I applied the stuff. I'm gonna wait until 3pm Friday Mar 16... just to see if it can still be turned upside down w/o coming off.

I'll try to get pics as soon as possible... still waiting on my gramps, who is still in Phoenix. >.<

Lego,

UMM I hate tell but Silicone is an insulator...That means that no heat is transferring to the heat sinks....In fact It's worst then not having any thing on it cause at least then the air can take the extra heat away. The white "silicone" that comes with your cpu is specially made to be electrically non conductive but very thermally conductive......I would take all the permtex off ASAP and order some 2 part Artic silver adhesive (Well worth the $12us) and use it to hold the heat sinks on...I know your trying to save coin but at this rate it's cheaper to buy the right thing once then burn up the ram.
