so i cracked my dam acrylic hard drive rack. i tighten the fan and the mount screws to tight. :banghead: so im going to make a metal one out of aluminum. :devious:

my question is this. how would i want to fit 5 drives onto this cage. so if have say 1/8th of an inch space between all of the drive, then put i want a 120 if i can. i will definitely have a 80. but im worried all 5 drives will get to hot being that close to each other. the top bottom and back will be completely open. i have about 6 inches to spare all together.

here is a pic of 4 of the drives together.

Yes, they will get hot. Yes, they'll still probably work just fine. Yes, you should definitely put a fan there.

i know they will get hot and still work im just worried about them getting to hot. like if that space is going to be enough to cool them down fast enough. oh and im still waiting for my bank to let paypal take the money out of my account. never ever ever ever ever use first Niagara.

As long as you put in the fan it should be fine. In the Aerocool m40 that I used for a while, two of the HDDs are mounted at least that close, with no fan cooling them, and they were fine. The only time I've suspected a HDD maybe dying from heat was when I had my fileserver as a pile of parts on my desk and all the HDDs were just stacked directly on top of each other.
