I recently installed an 8800 GT card on my desktop. I wanted to test out its capabilities, so I fired up a NFS Shift demo that I had (only game right now haven't installed any yet). After about one lap my whole screen got bright purple and pixelated and locked up. I was running the game at 1366x768 no AA but everything else maxed out. I thought it was the temps but this is what SpeedFan read at the time of the lockup.

Temp 1: 39C
Temp 2: 49C
Temp 3: 46C
HD0 : 38C
Core: 41C
GPU: 54C
Core: 54C
Ambient: 44C

Those temperatures just don't seem high enough to cause a lockup. Is the card failing on me? I have the 8800 fan at 100% when I was playing. I have 2GB RAM, 2.9Ghz AMD dual with stock cooler and a Rosewill 600W.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Yeah, that's nowhere near hot enough to cause lockups...maybe try updating the driver?

that was happening to me when i got my 4870. the computer would lock up and shut down by its self. turned out my power supply didnt have enough amps on the 12 volts rails to allow my video card to run normal. it was fine as long as i wasn't playing anything requiring a video card.

id say try it on different games.

what power supply and video card are you using. put links up please.

This is the PSU

I also had the latest drivers when this happened. I think it's faulty memory on the card.

Hmm, yeah, unless something is seriously wrong with your PSU I'd guess something's wrong with the GPU. Is it still under warranty?

I hope it's not the PSU, I just bought it like 3 weeks ago. And the 8800 i bought from someone here on the forums. I don't think it's the PSU anyways because I tried playing again and it happened again. I let it sit for like 2 min and it gave me some error saying the nVidia display driver has stopped working.

i would try uninstalling the driver, and re downloading it, then re install? you might have had a glitchy DL

:?

i knew that i wanted a link.

the 8800 gt needs at least 24 amps on the rails you have 19. try switching out your power supply for something better. if that dose not do the trick then its the card.

But it has 2 rails posted at 19 amps a piece, doesn't the card pull from both rails? Making it 38 amps. This card definitly shouldn't be a problem for this PSU.

see thats what i thought as well because my other power supply had 19 amps on each rails as well. but it turned out i needed 25 amps on each rail or something. plus it didn't help that my power supply was rated at what it was suppose to be. so that is why i bought a the corsair 750 wat one. 60 amps on each rail i do believe.

If I'm not mistaken (and I may well be), the rails are separate and it would only draw from one with a single power connector. That PSU has two native PCIe connectors. I would try an adapter that will let you hook two Molex connectors into a single PCIe connector and see what that does. The specs show it has six Molex connectors, if there are three connectors on two native cables try one from each cable in this adapter. If it does split the amperage that will provide power from both.

I've heard multi-rail PSUs derided for this very reason.

Edit: I used to run an 8800GT off of two 400-watt PSUs this way, one Molex from each separate PSU, and it ran fine. They only had one rail each at 16A.

So you would suggest something like this so that It can draw power from both rails?
http://www.xoxide.com/hiper-pci-e-adapter.html
So for future reference this PSU would work becuase it's single rail at 30 amps.

Yes, on both counts. Personally, because of stuff like this, I won't buy a multi-rail PSU. Also, PC Power & Cooling and Corsair don't make multi-rail PSUs (except for the 1kV Corsair), and they're the only manufacturers I'll buy for systems I really care about...

actually biggoofy i tried that with my power supply to. running off of the molexs and it didn't work. the problem is you need a new power supply. not a extension. the power supply isn't rated at what its suppose to be or isnt give you enough power. so you need a new better one like that corsair one. x88x is right corsair and pc and cooling are very good manufacturers.

Rosewill is Newegg's in house brand. Not saying that its at all bad, but their PSUs aren't up to the task of ANY gaming whatsoever.

Here's a good test for PSU. If it feels quite heavy, then it is good. If a 600 watt PSU weighs less than the paperback version of Lord Of the Rings, well....I'd get a different PSU.

Having gone the route of Rosewill in the past (WoW would lock up on me way back in the day until I got a beefier PSU), I am willing to bet that this is the issue.

I've got this PSU and its 12v rail is rated @60A :D I'm also running 2 Radeon HD3870x2's off this puppy with no issues. both with a 6-pin and 8-pin connector

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like I learned my lesson and seems I have to do a little more research in the PS department. :) And now I'm investing in a new PSU. Even though this is only 400w the rail is it 30 amps, and its super cheap after rebate.

Another plus for that new PSU Corsair has earned a reputation for quality products.

Ok just ordered it, along with an aftermarket card cooler should be here on Wednesday. Once again thanks for all the help. When I install it I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Ok I've got a problem. I hooked up the PSU and I started playing the NFS Shift Demo again. Right before completing a 2 lap race I'm thinking "Sweet this thing is finally working". Wrong, the screen went purple and pixelated and I'm pretty sure I saw a blue screen, but the computer restarted itself. When I logged back on I got one of those Microsoft error messages, but it didn't specify what it was about. Should I re-download drivers?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Just to be sure, I would completely uninstall the nVidia drivers, reboot, install the latest ones, then try it again. If it's still doing it with the new PSU and the new drivers, my money would be on the card.

Ok I got rid of the old drivers and I reinstalled new ones. I was playing the first Gears of War in Single player for at least 45 min with no signs of slowing down or locking up. I then went on to some multiplayer and also played for another 45 min but then another lockup. I'm at the point where I might just buy a new card. I also tried a demo of James Bond from the Games for Windows marketplace, but still ended up freezing.
I appreciate all the help from everyone but I think I'm going to have to invest in a new card. Anyone know a card that perform equally if not better than this one that's not to expensive?
Thanks in advance.

Still stuck on AGP, I assume?

AGP, the 8800 is a PCI-E card, so anything that is PCI-E will work for a replacement. As long as it handle the same stuff the 8800 GT can.
