this only happens when I'm playing MW2. I can use the computer otherwise for days on end and it won't happen. and it doesn't even happen all the time, seems kinda random. I'll be in the middle of a game, when the screen goes all funny colors and the sound locks up, then goes into BSOD (still with repeating locked up sound) until I manually reset the computer.

I used to get it saying IPv6 was the issue, so I disabled that and it was fine for a few days.

I checked the event viewer, and I get this:

and about a minute after rebooting, I get the first two (DNS related ones) again, but no lockup (presumably because I'm not in the game)

The DNS proxy agent was unable to allocate 0 bytes of memory. This may indicate that the system is low on virtual memory, or that the memory manager has encountered an internal error.

This line right here tells me we need more info on your computer. What OS, is it 32 bit or 64 bit, amount of RAM and your next of kin.

I see no picture, but my first suspicion is the power supply. What is the full specs of your computer? Be detailed as possible including component ages.

EDIT: A refresh later and I can see the log.

I was editing the info sorry

6GB DDR2-800 (2x@GB and 2x1GB, all PNY, approx 1 year old for the 2x2GB and 3 months or so for the 2x1GB)
Ultra X3 800W (approx 2 years old)
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
2 Radeon HD 3870x2's in crossfire (approx 3 years old)

Ethernet or Wireless?

SXRguyinMA
06-26-2010, 11:56 PM
wireless. Belkin wireless USB adapter. I've also noticed lately that my internet connection keeps dropping out for 10 seconds or so then coming right back up. I see the yellow triangle with the exclamation point over my signal meter, then it goes away and it's fine again

my first guess would be to try with an ethernet connection?

SXRguyinMA
06-27-2010, 01:06 AM
I'd love to, but that would involve undoing my entire computer, bringing it downstairs and into my parents house and setting it all back up lol.

My wife and I live in an apartment that's part of my parent's house. The router is through 1 wall and down stairs from our computer room. I get 80-95% signal strength all the time.

I've been doing some research online and it seems it may have to do with internet connection sharing. I hope not, because my wife's computer shares my wireless through ethernet via a (homemade) crossover cable. If I disable ICS then she'll have no internet lol. Either that or save up and buy her her own wireless USB dongle. Then she won't have to have my computer on just to use hers as well. That may be the way to go.

What channel are you broadcasting on? Try changing it by a factor of 5 (ie, if it is on channel 1, change it to channel 6).

Cordless phones, microwaves, baby monitors, or anything of the like in use when the connection drops?

How old is the dwelling?

How far are you from your wireless access point? How many walls/ceilings/floors are you going through.

I'm asking this because it is sounding like RF interference is causing a drop in signal, which in turn is pissing said game off and causing the BSOD.

Not sure if it would run on your hardware, but download netstumbler and see if you can pick up any other networks that are broadcasting on either the same channel as yours or a neighboring channel.

EDIT: I see you already answered part of the question--you're above the router. Not exactly a bad thing, but routers work best if they are at the highest point in the house--even though they broadcast omnidirectional, the strongest signals will go down.

is that in the modem/router settings?

Cordless phones, microwaves, baby monitors, or anything of the like in use when the connection drops?

not that I know of. I know the last 2 times it happened my parents were gone, the wife was gone, and the guy in the downstairs apartment was gone as well. So there should have been nothing on that might interfere

How old is the dwelling?
well over 200 years old, but the phone lines/cable lines, most of the electrical etc have all been redone way more recently

How far are you from your wireless access point? How many walls/ceilings/floors are you going through.
straight shot approx 20 feet. up one flight, through one wall. but signal strength is 80-95% all the time

1. New wireless adapter
2. Long cable

SXRguyinMA
06-27-2010, 10:47 AM
new adapter for the wife and turn off ICS? or new adapter for me?

we've been tossing the long cable idea around for a while now as well....just don't feel like running it through the walls lol

Yes, the channel settings are on the modem/router. Usually under advanced wireless.

hmm.... ooor nice new N pci card for you... new dongle for the wife, well, new for her at least

SXRguyinMA
06-27-2010, 12:44 PM
well I dont have any room for another PCI card because of the 2 3870x2s, and I've got a 6' USB extension cord hooked to my adapter to get better signal. We may just run two cat5 cables from where the router is up to our computer room and do it that way. we'll see though

SXRguyinMA
06-27-2010, 12:46 PM
now I just gotta remember what the un/pw for the modem is  I may just reset it and start fresh and write it down this time lol

Diamon
06-27-2010, 01:07 PM
ProTip: Run one cat5 cable and split it using a switch/hub. Also I suppose it might be the encryption that's screwing with your net. Have you tried using it unencrypted?

now I just gotta remember what the un/pw for the modem is  I may just reset it and start fresh and write it down this time lol

Are you talking about when you access the router through the computer, like in firefox? If you didn't change anything the default UN/PW might be
UN-Admin
PW-password

And can't you run an Ethernet cable between the 2 computers and just bridge the connection, or is that what's going on with the custom splitter?

SXRguyinMA
06-27-2010, 01:44 PM
no I went through and set up the router, changed the un/pw etc.

right now my computer connects via the USB adapter. then I took a cat 5 cable, found instructions online for converting it to a crossover cable (as to not need a switch or router) and her computer connects through mine that way.
