I will be doing what my family has been doing for 29 years now. My grandfather began roasting a whole hog over a pit in 1981. We have always done it on the night of July 3rd and have a huge family dinner on the 4th followed by out door games, drinking and then fireworks at night. When my grandfather passed away in 2004 I kept the tradition alive. I have an 88lb hog reserved, 2 gallons of hash, 6 racks of ribs, and about 4 cases of beer. I get to build the pit tomorrow, and pick up Oak and Hickory scraps from a pallet factory tomorrow morning and build a new coals barrel sometime tomorrow afternoon.
We usually have about 40 friends and family show up to eat and enjoy the day and we use to have 15-20 who would come over during the hog roast but that has died down to about 5 people now, which is fine for me because I do not have to worry about lots of people getting drunk and trying to drive home.
On Sunday we will have pulled pork bbq, hash and rice, ribs, mac and cheese, corn on the cob, potato salad, some form of greens, a few various casseroles, and more than likely some home made baked beans. There are usually several cakes, pies and other deserts that are brought by people.
This is the last tradition that is still standing in my family other than major holidays like Christmas, Thanks Giving or Easter. The only thing that has changed is the fireworks. When I was a kid and teen they were cheap because a family member owned a fireworks store but he sold it years ago, so we will be driving to a professional show that night. Its free and is almost an hour long.
So what are you doing?

Jack and squat. I've done nothing at all for the past 5yrs in a row. I just don't get holidays and don't like friends & family.
I'll probably be doing work for my online college class :( Oh how much I hate it....

Heading up to my sister's house to meet up with her, her husband, and my parents for...well, I really have no idea what we'll be doing. :P This is the first year we've done it at their place.

Going to my wifes hometown for a parade at noon, then a cookout at my brother in-laws, then back to town for fireworks.

Don't sob too long...we Americans have been planning this years national celebration for years! A full-scale invasion of Great Britain! It'll really be great! There will be loud noises, screaming, and the biggest fireworks display you will likely ever see! We knew how you missed us, and we feel bad about splitting away from you all, so we decided that we'd make you a part of us! It will be official in a few days.
As for me, I'll be working during the day and probably watch the fireworks over the river at night. Meh. I guess I'm just detached from the whole 'yay! we're FINALLY independent!' idea. I don't need an excuse to have a good time, so I won't. :D
I just don't get holidays...I know how you feel about that...I don't understand them myself. I don't feel the urge to do anything special on any day of the year to be honest. If you get paid hourly at work and aren't doing anything else...national holidays are good days to work.

Well I've been told I'm just mean. I'm English and my American wife lives with me in the UK - she didn't see the funny side when I asked "Now you've moved here and agreed to all of our laws and practices, what are you doing to celebrate your independence from the UK?"

That could be considered a little rude....

We cooked hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill. When it finally got dark enough we had fireworks. Bought some more today (cheaper after the 4th) and will be having another explosion filled night tomorrow, when my friends are off work.
