Ammo Box 360

New to the forums but have been lurking for a while

Started with the idea of making a case with 2 ammo boxs and having one of them stacked on top. I also wanted the DVD Drive to pop up from the bottom box.

I cut the bottom out of the top box same for the lid. Some spot welds and some bondo and sanded it all done and got a nice smooth finish

do u know which revision motherboard you have? if an older version.. (basically anything cept a jasper) the die sizes were rather big and got rly hot.... does it have HDMI?
just be really careful they fry real easy.... i would say a push pull setup of fans would keep it alive alot longer :)

Can you explain to me a push pull setup of fans, how does that work ?

Yes it does have HDMI, im thinking of putting the newer heat sinks on the CPU and GPU

Not to sure what motherboard it is.

A push pull setup of fans would, for example, be to have 2 fans blowing air into the case and 2 fans sucking air out of the case. This gives a better airflow and you can decide pretty much the exact way the air will travel through the case.

Example:

If it has a HMDI port it should be one of the newer version which shouldn't have the overheating-so-much-that-the-mb-flexes problem. Still, a new pair of heatsinks can't hurt, and as LiTHiUM0XiD3 said it'd likely increase its life span :)

Some updates.

Cut out the section for the HDMI, AV Cords and USB. Not 100% happy with it. I need to take a break on the mod otherwise i just cant get into it as much. Im waiting on alot of stuff from ebay and other online shops.

Been waiting for the post man today, finally got some of my supplies.

First time ever using cable sleeving, pretty tight fit and it took a while to do, but it makes such a difference. Definatly worth spending a couple $'s on.

I got 3 metres of green and 3 metres of black and some heatshrink. I have plenty left over.

Started with the fan first. Cut the cable to length then very slowly got the wire through, there must be some easier way. Maybe i need some thicker wire so it does not bend when trying to push it in. For some reason the green went on alot easier so i have not used any black yet. I finish off the ends with a small piece of heatshrink, nice clean finish.

Rough placement of the wires. They go back to the 12v supply at the back of the power plug.

Just put them in the picture to see what i have done, got them wires up to my momentary switches for the Power, Eject and Sync buttons, i will post detailed pictures to show people where to wire if they need too.

Just marked out a grid. 1cm spacing and used the drill press, bit quicker then the drill

Most of the wiring is now done, The power, sync and eject buttons are all wired up to momentary switches. Sleeved all the cables, still happy how they turned out. Just waiting on my LED Strip from Hong Kong now.

Made a new wireless network box, bought one of the hobby boxes and chopped and changed it a little to fit it in, some nice clean cuts on it and it fits perfect, it will be mounted on the back of the bottom box.

More prgress today. Trying to get as much done as i can, i have a break from work for a while.

Got the wireless adapter in position, this side of the case wont be seen as much. It came out pretty good for a last minute iidea and took about 10 mnutes to ge it where it is now.

Just another test fit. I now have to move the DISC Drive further across as the switches and wires are in the way a bit. I have already patched up the previous holes and got the new ones marked out.

Maybe try one of these fonts? You could print it out the size you want, then glue the paper onto cardstock and cut out the letters. That'll give you a nice cheap stencil. If you have access to similar ammo cans, you could even probably find a font that matches the original.

Tonne of parts with it, anti vibration pads, detailed instructions and interchangable LED's and stickers.. Was real easy to change them over, took only 5 minutes to do. Just had to double check they were all in the right way.

Finally found something for my USB's

Will get this and open it up and work something with it

Female to male connection, hopefully it reaches down to the USB ports, if not ill just get an extention. This will be mounted on the top of the lower lid towards the front. It will sit nice and flush with the metal

Bad News and Good News



Bad News - RROD. I will take all the wires off this and solder on a another Xbox 360, might just go buy a new one.



Good News - Finally some updates.



Because of the switches i have they are fairly long, i have had to move the Disc Drive over an inch or so. Patches up some old holes and made some new. Finally got the Disc Drive done and also have the USB port, just need some screws to fit in there, need a little bit longer.

..... xboxs r very tricky... u could fix your red ring... get it lead solder reballed (GPU HANA and SOUTHBRIDGE) and then reclamp it.... cost ya like $70 in total.... and it would never ring again lol
or.. u could buy a new 360.... and have it ring on ya... :)

The back is starting to come out good, got plenty of ventilation holes to take the hot air out. The Xbox is running real cool. Alot better then factory tempretures. Green Lights from the Fan are showing through nicely

More progress for the day, getting the final paint done today.



Painted the top color then taped it off so i could then spray the lighter green. Its worth spending the money on proper painters tape, it is under there, dont try using masking tape it does not work any where near as good.

Painted the USB also in the top darker colour, what do people think of scuffing up the paint a bit, on the edges and other areas, i have had a lot of replies saying that it looks too good the paint, needs to be a bit rougher. I think the stickers and original text on the ammo boxes will change the look of it a lot.

Some ideas for stickers or stencils, most probably stencil and spray it so it looks more authentic, then give it a light sand in areas to make it look original.

Picture below is just some ideas of the text, just did a quick google search and copied the text from the first one i seen, but you get the idea.

I was looking at ordering the stickers for the sides and other small things, comes out to be $54 which im not wanting to spend that on it, i dont think it will look to originsl either, so i decided i will go with the stencil. Easier said then done.

First i tried to cut out the text carefully with a razor blade, definatly time consuming cutting these letters out on a piece of paper. Only cut a few letters out just to test and see how it works

I like this look a lot over the stickers, i think they would keep making these ammo boxes looking too new, so im definatly going the stencil way, just not going to spend hours on cutting these letters, numbers and shapes out of paper, too time consuming

Went out and bought the stencil that i needed, came in a pack of 10mm and 20mm. I went with the 20mm becuase the 10 was too small and not noticable enough, is larger then original but still looks good.

Finishing off the stencil work on the bottom box, i decided to leave all over spray and small marks on it, it definatly adds to the effect of the ammo boxes. Starting to get close to finishing this case.

Time for some more updates have been busy with other things recently.

Just installing the newest dashboard by USB some reason its connection to Xbox Live but not wanting to update properly .

Found out with the disc drive sitting up the way it is, it does not like having no disc in it. Small noise comes from the disc drive when it tries to spin up a disc when nothing is in there. never noticed it before. Shouldnt be a problem, I don't usually take games out and not replace with another one.

Going to re wire the buttons at the back tomorrow, just to hard to unplug them the way they are. Wires are all crossed over so it makes a bit of a hassel. Need a Male to Female USB all so.

Recently got a Full HD Video Camera so i will get some video up in the next day or so, time to see it in action.

Couldnt see this taking much more then a couple of days to complete. The on to the next mod, im thingink Xbox 360 Slim Portable ( Laptop ) or Water Cool the Slim in a small Micro ATX Computer Case or HTPC. Getting ideas together for that and will have a new topic once the planning goes ahead

Sorry about the lack of updates, been extreamly busy. Has been an extreamly busy 14 months. Got engaged, married and now having a baby in that space of time.

I will take some better final photos to complete the project, nicer location and ill get some Army supplies and props to make a nice photoshoot. It will be the perfect way to finish the build off, i wouldnt know how much money i have put into this build now, it doesnt really matter, im happy with how it has all turned out, i learnt a tonne of things, never worked with this kind of stuff before and i taught myself a lot of it myself.
