I came across the Silverstone HDDBoost (http://www.silverstonetek.com/products/p_contents.php?pno=HDDBOOST) in this months Maximum PC.

claims to be able to use a SSD with any sized HDD with an end result of your own hybrid drive. Best of all, no reformatting!

Pretty neat although I think I'd rather just use the SSD as my OS drive.

Meh. I'm with you, I'd rather use the SSD properly and manage what's on the HDD and SSD manually. That does look like a nice way of getting a nice performance boost on the cheap though. You could hook up, say, a 1TB Samsung F3 and a 60GB OCZ Vertex2, and assuming the device works properly, most of the stuff you actually use should stay cached on the SSD.

So, to sum up: Neat idea, could be useful, but I wouldn't use it.

Ya, I feel like the point of a hybrid drive it to avoid paying the premium for an SSD while still seeing decent performance boost and higher capacity.

Paying for an SSD + a HDD + the HDDBoost only to see minimal performance boost seems a bit retarded. It seems to be aimed towards the noobs that can upgrade their computer speeds without reformatting or any of that jazz.

If you're able to install this thing you SHOULD be able to reinstall your OS which makes me think this product has no market.

I dunno, I can totally see this thing being slung by geek squad and other pc shops for some astronomical amount. "We can boost your speeds in 10 minutes! Nearly instant turn around time and your computer will then be one of the faAaAastest in the world! That'll be 24.95...million."
