My nerves are real high. I leave in 20 minutes for my first day at my new job at Radio Shack. I'm going to be doing an initial training for 30 days and then starting Ass Mgr training. I don't know why I'm so nervous. It's just work, not much different from my old job.
Man, I hope I don't screw this up.

Good Luck! The key to being not nervous is knowing in your head that you can own this job and being confident in yourself.

Ass manager sounds onerous. I'd be nervous too.
All jokes aside, I start a new job on Monday, and I'm bricking it.

Nah, Asspirate.
Anyways, I seem to think I do better when I'm nervous about things. Probably because I take things slower when I'm nervous.

First day on the job, sold a laptop! They were shocked I knew as much as I did.
...I didn't know "The Shack" even sold laptops. ...good thing I don't work there. :P Congrats!

Did you sell it with the optional extended warranty, the optional multifunction printer and the travel adapter that hardly anyone needs?

With $150 plan and carry case.

Congratulations on the job. My brother-in-law brought his Sony laptop from Radio Shack about a year ago.

I'm probably gonna look for another job soon. I HATE cell phones and trying to learn about them is very annoying, especially since I don't care. I've been told that I will be expected to sell at least one new phone per day. That's regular or prepaid, I think. To me that sounds impossible. How many people will really be in everyday for a new phone? Especially in a smaller town.

Actually, there's more people buying new phones than you might think. I live in a small town, and every time I go in the local Radio Shack, there's always someone buying a phone.

Everyone I work with is shocked that I don't love my phone and texting and using the internet on my phone, but I don't. I make phone calls and that is all. That's going to be my biggest problem with selling phones. I don't care about phones at all.

/\ That. Phones suck. Plain and simple. I swear carrying a cell phone is like walking around with a scorpion in my pocket.

Yup. I've got a bare bones cheapo for necessity. Don't text or anything else. A phone is for calls period.
OMGZLOL, YOU DON'T HAVE TEH IHPONES? WHAT YOU DO WORK HERE?
Seriously though, I'm not surprised. I remember reading recently that something like 90% of their business is phones now...I remember when working at Radio Shack meant that you knew something about electronics. Like, not how to use them, but how to make them. Those days are loooong gone.

Yeah, last two times I've been into Radio Shack (two different ones, mind you) and asked a question about some of the relays they had in the small parts cabinet I was told point blank that they didn't know anything about anything "in that cabinet".
"If you want to know how to set up your phone I'm your guy, but I don't know nothing about anything in that cabinet."
Verbatim, double negative and all. TGS, you're vastly overqualified.

It's true that they've basically turned into a cell phone store. Not only should that not be their main focus (since they're supposedly more than that) but they carry everything available in my area except Verizon (which I use). So not only are they usually bad for non-cell electronics, but I can't use them even for service on my cell phone.

i know its late, but congrats on being an ass man! (chuck joke) we have one by us that still carries a ton of neat stuff, the owner is a little old man and i think he stocks alot of it himself, rather than through the franchise... its nice that some people remember what is important in a buisness... making money by occupying a niche.

I love stores like that. That's why whenever I can I always use the ACE Hardware store instead of Lowes or or Home Depot. They're a little further away, and cost a little more, but it's a small, family owned business that carries a lot of the weird little things that us modders need, that most stores don't even know exist. Besides, the people that work there tend to be a lot more genuinely friendly and knowledgeable than the people at big chain stores. :D I think the true test of a good store is if you can wander around it for a decent amount of time, find what you're looking for, have a useful conversation with the staff, and leave without feeling pressured to buy anything else. If a store can meet those three requirements, I'll gladly drive a little further or pay a little more.
EDIT:
An additional perk is if the employees are knowledgeable enough to know where you can get something if it's not available there, and will send you in the right direction instead of trying to convince you that you need or want something else.

Had the same thing happen last time I was in there. I asked where they kept some female molex plugs for a project and they flat out told me they don't carry stuff like that for computers. I told them I'd look around a bit, opened the drawer and there they were.
