I know there are plenty of rants about this, but seriously I remember when I this is what made teenage girls scream and get all giddy t-idDbIfGvw and now its things like the asexual bieber. I mean the quality of music is so low that I am still listening to "pop" music from my parent's and grand parents time. I have gone so far as to ask for a record player for my birthday and christmas for about the past ten years. Neither my parents or my wife now have come through so this year I think I will buy my own.

There's zero originallity in music anymore. Todays country is mostly a bunch of covers or rip-offs of old rock/pop songs and they all sound alike. Either that or they try to sound like 90's boy bands. American Idol sure as H@#L is'nt helping the situation any. It's all just craptacular. Also why I don't listen to the radio much if it can be helped.

Shinedown seriously??? their major break was covering songs by some of my favorite bands. Don't get me wrong that's how a lot of bands do it I just don't think that they did the best version of simple man which seems to be the consensus with younger people. Breaking Benjamin is good and bad, they are hit and miss but a great live band. I didn't say I didn't enjoy new stuff just seems there was a lot more quality and originality with older music.

Shinedown's break was LONG before they covered simple man. They were around a long time before that, they just got "popular" because of it I guess you could say. Plus their other stuff all kicks major ass. 1 or 2 covers out of 30+ original songs? sounds like plenty of originality to me

Well thats never what gets played, you have to take into consideration I live in the highly censored bible belt of America, I am just bitter over people praising them for their covers so I may be biased. I never said rock was dead I was just speaking in general todays music in general is crap. I listen to all kinds of music and its just crap anymore. I am tired of all this soft rock crap too thats coming out, as george carlin said there is no rock in soft rock so all you got left is soft. Most of your rap and pop stars aren't good at anything anymore. With modern rock and can stop and listen to the lyrics and they make sense they tell a story, try and get that out of a pop song. Country music anymore is crap, give me some Hank the Third he's not afraid to tell half of nashville they can go to h..l because what they are doing isnt country music.

The other thing that really bothers me with modern music is all the computer bs thats invovled. Used to be if you heard a band on the radio they were just as good if not better live, you don't get that anymore. But there are still some rock bands out there that I would sell body parts to see live again: Breaking Benjamin, Korn, 3 Days Grace, 10 years, Hurt, Hellyeah, Stonesour, and I am sure I am forgetting a few others. Surprisingly enough when I saw Staind live I kind of sat in my seat disappointed for most of the set.

i mostly agree with you snow man. the auto tune is getting worse. that is actually how most people are starting to sing. it used to be you had a good voice or you didnt make it now all you have to be able to do is put on a good show and pull people in. kinda something like gaga does. rock isnt dead but its dieing. there is only one rapper /r&b i listen to and that's eminem. his stuff actually makes seance still. but peopel like lady gaga and justin beaver, lil wayne, kesha, all the people like that are just idolizing the money they make and brain washing the youth. they dont care about the fans or the music just how much they are going to get a record. but there are still a few select badns that are still original like ,seether,shinedown,disturbed,eminem,3 days grace, muse, the list goes on.

Oneslowz28

As a Shinedown aficionado I can attest to their big break being way before Simple Man. Hell "45" went big well before "Simple Man". Shinedown's latest stuff like The Crow and The Butterfly, Second Chance, and If you only knew, are some of their best works to date.

IMO the best artist out today are:

Shinedown
Three Days Grace
Sage Francis
Seether
Breaking Benjamen

T.I.
Lil Wayne
BOB
Akon
Gucci Mang
Kid Cudi
Ludacris

That's about it.

People like to group people like Justin Beiber, Miley Cyrus, and the other various gay / crap / boy or girl band / whiney / emo / vampire / goth goups into the rock category because in most older Americans minds, there are still only 4 music genres: Country, Rock, Hip hop, Classical. They still combine pop and rock into the same category because 99% of it does not relate to them. The same goes for Rap, R&B and hiphop. They are 3 different category but mainstream America still views it all as the same urban jibberish.

Before I end this I want to say that Shinedown is one of, if not THE BEST current day rock group out. They have the potential to reach the same level as Nervana, GNR, Black Sabbath, and maybe even the Rolling Stones. I would say Metallica, but I doubt they will ever be topped.

I agree 100% CJ, I've loved shinedown since their first song came out some years ago and love their newest CD just as much if not more. I've also seen them in concert (luckily in a SMALL venue - Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom) 4 or 5 times now and they've blown me away every time. Easily one of the best concerts I've seen in a long time. Followed in a close second by Papa Roach

I don't know I just am not a huge fan of shinedown and honestly is mostly because of a bias for a myriad of reasons. I did not really get into the era of newer rock until a few years ago... well actually about 7 or 8 but most people would crucify me for saying I can't stand Metallica, I like their music but still can't stand them.

I couldn't agree more, today's music sucks. I haven't listened to the radio in probably a year now. I turned the radio on once a while back, and it was the same garbage they were playing the months before.
I've come to the realization recently that most of the music on my iPod right now is 10 years old, or even more. So the music we like is getting older, and we are bitching about the new music coming out now....

OMFG we are turning into our parents!! Nooooooo

To play the devil's advocate just a little here, imagine how hard it is to come up with something new. Not just in music, but in the movies, too. Everyone in the world is more than eager to find reasons to tear down your work, and anything you do is going to be compared to something else. It really is coming to that point where everything has been done before....

Snowman

I think a more concise observation would be that everything that is popular and will get you money has been done before.

I agree with the movies part - notice how many remakes of old movies are coming out now? Granted theres still a ton of original stuff, but also TONS of remakes and sequels (Shrek and Toy Story - *shivers*)

I'm with you on Metallica. I don't like them per se, but there are maybe 5 or 6 songs that I love, the rest I can't stand. Shinedown has had me hooked since day 1. Each CD still sounds like them, but has totally different music. Even Seether (who's Careless Whisper cover I LOVE) is the same - each CD is still them, but strikingly different than the last. I also currently love Papa Roach. Their earlier "hip-hop" style stuff I didn't care for too much (although I love Between Angels and Insects), but their newer stuff is just amazing. Funny enough I've got their song "Lifeline" as a ringtone and ring-back tone on my cell :D Amazing song

Metallica? Ugh. Before Load=win. After Load, they suddenly realized they could make a lot of money, and started "cleaning up"... =fail. To put it another way, everything after Load was a load of crap.

Now, bands like Type O Negative (R.I.P. Peter Steele), Otep, KMFDM, or even Cannibal Corpse, who refused to compromise on their music, even if it costs them money, deserve respect. They keep the spirit of music alive, instead of letting it dissolve by selling out. (Korn comes to mind when I think of sellouts.)

My taste in music is, in a word, eclectic. I can go from this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQOgWkD9YCQ) to this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74dzYsWydRc) to this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jI2ZoANJPoM) and back again. Today's pop music is dreadful. Anytime I hear a pop song, I want to punch a record producer. Having a teenager doesn't help much with that either.

I went to a DCI show a few weeks ago. Sooooooo good. I really wish I would've done it.

I like Metallica. The S&M album is the best by far.

As for other stuff it looks like I'm going to be in a minority. I'll post some of the best stuff from what I like. I by no means like pop music (except the rare rare exception). Here's some really no name stuff and some more mainstream stuff that I like.

Animal Collective - My Girls (their other stuff kinda stinks, but this is awesome)
zol2MJf6XNE

Kimbra - Settle Down (this song and video are incredible)
yHV04eSGzAA

Pomplamoose (I'm just kinda getting into their stuff. The covers and videos are nice)
Uolz7V12evc

Tokyo Police Club - Graves (It's hard to choose just one song from them. Their stuff is so varied but really good.)
dtYffRIGCRo

Pinback - Loro (Not an official video, and their other stuff isn't as good as this)
8yV-T882hts

Phoenix - 1901 (their last two albums are some of the best music ever made)
HL548cHH3OY

Kings of Leon - King of the Rodeo (been a fan for years and years. Great stuff)
EosX5fqTDSk

Goodbye Tomorrow - If Your Eyes Were Mine (lead singer not with group anymore. Studio version of this song is so much better, but he has a great voice and this song rocks)
FGVgagZwb9I

Sour (pepsi stole this hardcore)
WfBlUQguvyw

Black Kids - I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend (Strange but catchy)
rOV6I4fYnvQ

Coldplay - See you Soon acoustic live (This song is like coming home)
8UJ2iPHWOlE

Other groups I really like are Wolf Parade, Bright Eyes, Venus Hum (just to name a few. These videos don't even touch on my love of jazz and my limited but passionate love of good rap (hard to come by).

For the most part I like older stuff - Tom Petty, Rolling Stones - bands that are on the "Classic Rock" station. They've started playing some (relatively) newer stuff that I like - Nirvana, Foo Fighters - and it makes me feel kinda old. I like some newer bands...Shinedown, Kings of Leon.

I definitely agree that most of the 'popular' music these days sucks. Some of the newer rock and 'indie' stuff I like though...Muse and Gorillaz come to mind. For the most part though, I like to put it this way: Most of the music I listen to was either made before I was born or in Norway or Japan. My favorite genres are classic rock (ie, 70's-80's), some country, most classical (ie, orchestral, largely pre-1900's), Gothic and Symphonic Metal (most of the good stuff seems to come out of Norway..idk why), J-pop/rock, and some 90's-era rap. Strange combination, I know. It was always funny to see the look on peoples' faces when they would be hanging out in my dorm room at college and the music would skip from, heavy, Gothic Metal to a Bach Fugue, to some weird little J-pop group. :D What I like best is groups that blend lots of seemingly incompatible instruments and sounds into a single work that actually works well. Symphonic Metal groups do this a lot, mixing traditional Metal instruments (electric guitar, electric bass, drums, etc) with Classical instruments (woodwinds, strings, brass, etc). Also, I love me a good theramin performance. :D

That last brings something to mind that I've been wondering about. I've noticed that when I'm listening to music in a different language, I tend to enjoy it more than music in a language that I can actually understand. IDK if that's because I don't feel the need to concentrate on it, or because I can just switch off the language centers of my brain, or what. Anyone have a similar experience?

Broken Social Scene doesn't have a fixed number of people in the band. They sometimes have 13 or more people in it. They mix a lot of stuff in this song, and I love it. Their other stuff is alright, but this gem is worth their existence.

I think one of the really bad things about music is lyrics. Pop music will be catchy and have my attention until there is a line that makes no sense or is totally stupid.

I went to a DCI show a few weeks ago. Sooooooo good. I really wish I would've done it.

Who was there? I had an audition for (and made) the Bluecoats for their 1993 season. Contrabass. I didn't know that I made it though until a few camps later when they called and asked me where I had been. I didn't have the funds to march though. I had a couple of friends who marched Bluecoats, SVC, another that made Cavies (1992 - but didn't march. I gave him SOOOO much crap after finals that year. Especially since were there), Cadets (1995) and an ex girlfriend who made Star 1993, but decided not to march.

I marched with these guys (http://www.wjmb.org) for 4 years though.

I did play pit percussion for a while in high school, so I could have tried for that, but I was too chicken. yup, I admit it...cluck, cluck...oh well

I've seen Blue Man Group four times. NYC, Complex Tour in Seattle, Chicago, and Las Vegas. I think the best was in NYC, but that was also the first time I saw their static show. The Las Vegas venue is really big, which is nice but made it less intimate than in NYC. In any case it's good enough that I've done it four times, but I don't think I'd do a fifth unless it was for free or another tour. Go see Blue Man Group!
