View Full Version : We're all gonna die.
Yup, the robot apocalypse is creeping ever closer, and I for one welcome our robot overlords. I mean, it's not like they're going to eat us or anything, right? ...wait, what?

Yup, that's right, this robot ingests organic material, digests it in its microbe-filled stomach to create hydrogen, and then excretes the waste. They're calling them Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs). The process is only at ~1% efficiency right now, but there are an amazing number of awesome applications for this. Sewer cleaning robots that generate power by eating the waste in the sewers, treatment plants powered by the stuff that they're treating, long range drones than can generate power off local insect or plant life. ..oh, and of course our robot overlords eating us for dinner. Finally, we can cut out the middle-man from the Matrix and just go straight to being food for them. :D

That's pretty interesting. Methane has been bled from landfills and used to power generators for decades, and now this. If there's so much energy left in our waste, why is it waste?

Waste is only waste when it requires more energy to retrieve the energy stored in it than is gained. Case in point, nuclear waste. What was considered unusable waste 50 years ago is now seen as fuel. The process repeats itself many times throughout history; as energy extraction processes grow more and more efficient, more and more fuels become viable.

And with Bio-electronics beginning to show promise, it is not long before we have truly intelligent robotics that will be able to actually think and make rational decisions. Now is the time to turn Asimovs 3 Laws of Robotics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Laws_of_Robotics) into actual legal binding laws.
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
I also propose a 4th law.
4. Any Creator of a robot or robot race that begins to develop the Matrix, shall be subjected to watching reruns of the sitcom Rosanne, non stop until his death.

...upon which, life will be restored and a second episode will commence.:D

I dunno... I think having a matrix would be pretty sweet. well... a near-instant way of transferring knowledge would be sweet! like, I wanna learn how to fly a helicopter. bam! done.
