You did well until you hit AIR-COOLED.

Summer wouldn't be the best time for an air-cooled record. Haha

Specs of the test system?

Trace

Specs will be as follows:
Intel Core i7-980x EE
ASUS Rampage II GENE
3 x 2GB Corsair Ram
60GB OCz SSD
noctua nh-d14

Why would it not be the best time for a record attempt? Some of us leave the AC on 24-7 and keep our homes 65 year round. It was 102 here yesterday and the inside of my home was about 67f.

Imagine if it was already in the 60's though. I'd imagine it would help quite a bit if you could get the room in the low 50's. :)

You gotta admit that doing it outside in the Alaskan winter WOULD bring the temps down a bit :)

Good luck with the record breaking though, I'll be sure to tune in.

You still got that toy I sent you if the air don't work?

Trace
07-22-2010, 03:28 PM
That I do Kayin, and it will be put to use.

I managed ~4.75 already on air in my first couple of attempts.

Bit-tech has been beaten! I just ran a stable bench mark at 4739Mhz. Bit-tech's highest was 4715 and that was on water!

Yeah, I might use a 5870 for some final benching, but as of now, I prefer the power to the cpu

Well we hit 4.8 on Air and that was our highest of the day. Trace did boot into windows at 5.0 but it would not go stable under cinebench. So we are going to get a different motherboard and try again!

Drum Thumper
07-24-2010, 12:34 AM
4.8, where's that stand record wise?

Trace
07-24-2010, 01:08 AM
Highest for this site, I do believe, for any chip :P

We will be attempting this again. Not releasing full details yet, but in about 2 weeks, we will have a 2 day overclocking event!

hehehehehe did that awhile back, Duct it up into your A/C unit and it ought to fly off air cooling in the summer time.

or try again on the coldest day of winter.

I remember seeing that! I prefer dry ice (~-57*C) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dry_ice)

After looking at THIS (http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=324756), I think you should definitely go for some LN2 pots if possible. Granted, he found one without a cold bug, but clocks anywhere close to his would be pretty epic.

Trace

Oneslowz28 is going to get some custom ones made.

Isn't there going to be a wall you hit no matter how cold it is?

Trace
07-28-2010, 01:19 AM
Well. Eventually....

TheGreatSatan
07-28-2010, 11:17 AM
And that wall could be 4.8GHz

Every proc is different though, so another may get past 5......

Kayin

Phenom II isn't really coldbugged at all, and a lot of the i-series processors have pretty low ones. Dice shouldn't affect it. Besides, you do have that package I sent you, and it should be worth some fun.

If it gets down to it, dump your mix, replace the box with a slush of Dice and acetone and shut the lid. Let people marvel. You may get crystals at that point. But I think it's safe to there.

Trace

I did boot into windows at 5+ so I think we have it in the chip no problem
