Ok, before we get started, let me say that this is my first major mod, so it's going to be a bit rough. It's not really important to me, so I have room for error
I'm going to be rebuilding this old zombie:

ugly, isn't it?

this is what it looks like on the inside
http://i964.photobucket.com/albums/ae126/RRobins/computer%20pictures/DSC03790.jpg
with everything removed
the madness begins soon, once I figure out everything I will be doing to it

my updates are going to be very irregular, so don't count on anything constant(or good) :whistler:
by the way, does anyone know where I can get some aluminum to work with? I don't have a lot of spare cases to cut apart

Home Depot or Lowes should have some, not sure what dept. I get stuff like that at Menard's here but probably not one close to you in CA.

I tried them already. all they have is aluminum angle. no sheet metal. no mesh either
so I'll have to improvise

You could ask a sign shop. Used to work at one and sign blanks come in 18"x24" and some other sizes that I don't remember off hand. If your lucky they might have some scrap pieces. Just a thought.

One of our members reported that he had found some mesh at his local Lowe's in the BBQ grill section. 12x18 for 5 bucks.

Most of the pics in the thread have been deleted but there is one showing the mesh he used in his laptop cooler (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22916&page=3).

Best of luck on the necromancy!

Have you asked one of the floor associates if they know where the sheet metal is? I know we have it at the Lowes up by me. O.o;

lol, I tried that at Home Depot and Ace. both times I was lead around the store for no reason at all(it did get me a 10% discount though :D)
I'm working on and off for the rest of the day, so I'll post an update at the end of the day

do you have a tractor supply near you? I know TSC has sheet metal and stuff like that

Couch3ater

Lol, I know Ace is unlikely to have it, but I'd give Lowes a try if there's one around. I'm certain I've seen it there before. As for Home Depot... No idea. Not one close enough for me to go browse. And the 10% discount is nice too. Some cheap hardware. =D

ok, first update. let the crapfest begin!
first up is some wire management. so I used a holesaw to cut this hole for the hard drive/cd drive cables next to where the motherboard will be
http://i964.photobucket.com/albums/ae126/RRobins/computer%20pictures/DSC03840.jpg
next is the space behind the heatsink. For management purposes, I decided to take out the middle
http://i964.photobucket.com/albums/ae126/RRobins/computer%20pictures/DSC03842.jpg
a little bit of time with a dremel, and out it goes
http://i964.photobucket.com/albums/ae126/RRobins/computer%20pictures/DSC03844.jpg
I did sand it, but I forgot to take pics. I'll probably one later
then things get ugly. first, this card holder has GOT to go.
http://i964.photobucket.com/albums/ae126/RRobins/computer%20pictures/DSC03845.jpg
drill out the rivets, and less than two minutes later, you get this
http://i964.photobucket.com/albums/ae126/RRobins/computer%20pictures/DSC03846.jpg
next I cut a rectangle out of a spare side panel using my dremel. I tried the fencing method used by Rendermandan, but that didn't go so well for the angle that I used, which I had been planning to save for later. oh well, guess I'll have to use it on this project :D
anywho, here's the rectangle after some sanding(forgot to take a picture before sanding :dead:)
http://i964.photobucket.com/albums/ae126/RRobins/computer%20pictures/DSC03847.jpg
some very bad bending later convinced me to redo the piece after I get better at bending sheet metal, but it gives me an idea of what it'll look like later
http://i964.photobucket.com/albums/ae126/RRobins/computer%20pictures/DSC03850.jpg
well, that's it for now. Might try to do something later, but no promises

I've heard of people getting scrap metal from hardware stores, so I asked where I could. and the discount was just because of the wasted time(they also led me in circles looking for rubber grommets that day)

Hahaha, exactly! A discount is good, no matter the reason. ^^;;

Ok, right now I'm working on the top panel, but the project is on hold until I can get a rivet gun to start putting the top panel together.
by the way, anyone have some tips for dremeling a straight cut?

Locum51
07-28-2010, 10:31 PM
I work at a Ace and we have sheet metal and sheet metal mesh...not a lot but we have the basics.
As far as cutting straight, i like to use masking tape and triple check it's straight before i cut.

StormRider
07-29-2010, 01:21 AM
huh, so Ace does have some scrap metal. Couch3ater, you've got some explaining to do
and I mean actually keeping the dremel straight while cutting. drawing a straight line isn't as much of a problem.
note: tomorrow I might be able to get that rivet gun, plus some more aluminum angle and belts for the belt sander(I REALLY don't want to hand sand this thing straight) so I can keep working on my idea for the top panel

Couch3ater
07-30-2010, 11:27 AM
Lol, explaining?! Oh dear. Hahaha, well, on the topic of keeping the Dremel straight, it's really just a matter of patience and a steady hand. Personally, my hands register at about 6.7 on the Richter scale, so cutting a straight line is out of the question. I usually just mask out my area, leave a little bit of excess on the cut, then file away the rest. It leaves me with a straighter line. =D

Locum51

Haha. Ace Hardware is a franchaised hardware store, there is a nationwide warehouse so every ace hardware chooses what to stock and not stock....you can always special order things though!

But like Couch3ater said "patience" is key.

alright, I have been a bit busy, and I got the wrong size sander belt, so this might be the last update in a little while
I'm working on a new top panel idea, and this is the first step:
http://i964.photobucket.com/albums/ae126/RRobins/computer%20pictures/DSC03853.jpg
I'll be fixing it up with these new toys
http://i964.photobucket.com/albums/ae126/RRobins/computer%20pictures/DSC03855.jpg
I got a little sanding/filing done, but I'll wait until I get the new belts for the belt sander to continue this part. Tomorrow I'll do the side windows. until then, I'll be staving off my modder's disease
http://i964.photobucket.com/albums/ae126/RRobins/computer%20pictures/DSC03854.jpg
I'm turning into a PC.
MUST........NOT........MOD......MYSELF......
