Hello!

Basically I am running two systems; my advent netbook, and my desktop pc which is upstairs. Three PC's and one Xbox connect to the huawei echolife 520b router talktalk gave us when we signed up in March. My mother's Netbook and my 360 connect fine, but my desktop has a bad connection and the netbook wont connect unless it's ethernet. The desktop im not too bothered about since it's for media, but the Netbook worked fine until I had to run a backup because of viruses!

I tried copying the settings from my tcp ip settings on my desktop which failed, my mothers netbook didn't have the settings there so im assuming it auto assigned it.

HELP!?

I think you still got that virus. That 520b site...well it has me a bit concerned.

I would assume the 520b.com has to do with the 520b router. I would say to change that, but that could possible mess up phone service? Why not though...you can always switch it back. Go to http://www.dnsserverlist.org/. In the box towards the bottom it will give you recommended servers in your area.

Other thoughts:
The computer is configured properly to connect and receive an IP using wireless? When you try to connect without the ethernet plugged in, is it still assigned an IP address?

520b is the talktalk dns server.

When I try to connect wireless, the pc does pick up the network but goes in a frenzy between disconnected and acquiring network address!

Change the wireless broadcast channel by a factor of five (for example, if it is broadcasting on channel 1, change it to 6), and delete and rebuild your wireless profile on the laptop.

Is XP running vanilla/SP1? XP didn't get WPA until a patch / SP2. And didn't get WPA2 until SP3 IIRC.

If your wireless network is running on WPA, then you need to get SP2 (or the correct patch, but better to just install SP2) onto the XP computer before it can successfully connect to your wireless router. Download it on another computer from Microsoft's web page, and toss it on a usb stick to transfer to the netbook.

EDIT: Your connect/disconnect frenzy makes me believe this is the problem. I'd bet anything you are trying to connect to a WPA network. I'd go the update router, but you can test the problem by switching the network to WEP for a bit. If I'm right it will connect without issue.

EDIT2: If you've got the wrong key I've seen similar things happen as well.

EDIT3: I am referring to fixing the netbook's wireless issue after reinstall.
