Hey my first idea i guess that im going through with, its basically a N64 shell with a pc inside.
It will still have the 4 front controller ports but these will be attached to 2 n64 to USB adapters.

My main use for this will be basically an n64 emulator as a n64 console, all your favorite games but in full HD which is great eye candy :D.

Ive already done some tests with some adapters and emulation on a 52" screen the games turnout fantastic along with perfect sound.

Only difficult problems im facing is fitting a mini-itx inside the console case, my measurements so far have theoretically proved that this can work im just waiting for a console ive purchased to arrive so i can get some final measurements to see if this is viable :)

Heres the list of parts i will be using:

nintendo 64 console:

controller adapters x2:

http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/6241/n64usbadapter1.jpg

Zotac GeForce 9300-ITX WiFi LGA775 v3:

http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/2425/zotac9300isidelg.jpg

PICOPSU-150-XT:

http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/9484/pico150xtpluglg.jpg

Samsung 2.5" HDD 160GB:

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/8512/harddisk160gbsata25lg.jpg

OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500 SLI 2x1GB:

http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/7735/ocz2n1066sr2gksss.jpg

SilverStone Nitrogon NT07-775 Low Profile CPU Cooler:

http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/3087/27405.png

I have about 4.7cm of total height to use and the 17cm x 17cm motherboard just fits :) so theoretically it will work :D

Any feedback is welcome.

Keep checking for updates soon :)

cheers.

Bonus points if you get the ram slots to line up with the cartridge slot.

Would a 2.5 inch hdd fit in a cartridge?
mod a cart, stick the hdd in it, run the satas to the mobo, glue in place.

Or if there is enough depth to the n64, place the mobo as far forward as possible and make the cart a hot-swappable hdd cage by attaching the satas to the bottom of the case and placing the hdd vertically inside the n64 cart. When the cart is inserted the satas plug in and voila, boot.

dcattena
08-02-2010, 08:53 PM
Thats a pretty awesome idea! Ill see if i can have a perminent cartridge in there housing the hard drive. It might be difficult seeing as the cpu cooler is right near the cartridge slot.

Lol is that a good thing?

I think so.. ;) I've got my Mac Mini attached to a 37" Sharp Aquos, only 720p, but still looks great. Gaming? No. Media/Surfing? Yes.

Anyways, I'm a big fan of retro console mods, so I say run with this project! The hot swap SATA cartridge thing would be cool, but not exactly practical. Hdd's are a bit fragile, so parking it in a removable cartridge would just be unnecessary risk IMHO.

Now you COULD do a usb flash drive in the cartridge, since I cant think of any emulators that require drive access faster than USB. You could look into another thread on here, where someone was wanting to run apps from a USB drive. Park your emu's on there, or even some apps.. etc. Maybe even run Readyboost and get a performance increase from it.

:D

dcattena
08-03-2010, 08:02 PM
Yeah the hdd does sound abit impractical, the usb does sound nice but maybe i could just stick with the consolw for now and can worry about those towards the end. :)

Media/surfing would be great too, i might need a little more than 160 gig if i wanna get alot of media on there :S

ill get a wireless mouse and keyboard setup too but it might ruin the picture of a typical living/tv room with pc accesories around. Hopefully i can get a remote for everything and the n64 controllers as a mouse and some keyboard shortcuts which ive managed to make them do so far :)

Still waitin for the console to arrive!

Anyone know anything about re-sanding plastic back to or close to original gloss, because now that ive cut most of this case on the inside whats a good method of fixing it up? Maybe along the lines of fine grit sandpaper and wet sanding is what i can think of.

cheers

BS Mods
08-18-2010, 11:51 AM
This is a cool mod.

As far as getting the plastic back to smooth and glossy, it's pretty tough. Usually you have to sand it and paint it the original color to get the gloss. If it's really rough you can use a primer first to fill sand scratches, wet sand the primer with 1000 grit, then paint over that.

Snowman
08-18-2010, 12:01 PM
You could also try some wetsanding and a plastic polish like plastix

msmrx57
08-18-2010, 11:50 PM
Someone on here used Novus plastic polish on something... Nope can't remember who or what log, but they said it worked great after a very fine grit 1500 or higher. SXRguy has used it on acrylic on a couple of his logs as well.

SXRguyinMA
08-19-2010, 08:23 AM
yep, novus 3 (harsh grit) and 2 (finer grit) together with a cloth buffing wheel work great! Check out my rockin case log, I used it a LOT in there

dcattena
08-19-2010, 10:44 PM
thanks SXRguy looks great, awesome info sounds like it could work, should i be looking at about 1500 or higher grit to get that nice finish? Ive got a little buffer wheel too to use at the end.

SXRguyinMA
08-20-2010, 07:39 AM
when I did all that I went 1000 to 1500 to 2000, then the buffer. that plastic is probably softer than acrylic though, so take it REAL easy with the buffer so you don't melt it

dcattena
08-20-2010, 12:38 PM
Sounds good :) im gonna be picking up some sandpaper today, ill take it easy with the buffer ill just do bit by bit until its reasonable. I should have some pics up later :D

Luke122
08-20-2010, 03:53 PM
If you are just worried about polishing up the inside of the case, I wouldnt bother, since the hardware is going to hide most of the case interior anyways.

08-20-2010, 11:45 PM
I know what u mean luke, i just want to go through with it because if i leave it i feel like ive done a half assed job along the lines of "you cant see it why do it". Good idea n i see where ur comin from but i still wanna go through with it :) has to look pretty everywhere :P cheers

Hey just an update here, just finished cutting the top half of the case and sanded it with my nice 600 and 1200 grit sandpaper :) so smooooooooooooooth along with some buffing. I couldn't get rid of most of the deeper cuts which you can see in some of the pictures.

Another problem ive run into after doing some more measurements is that a normal 2.5" hdd wont fit inside this case alone with the components which is a problem :O luckily i have found this lil life saver:

http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=StorageSolutions/PCNotebookHardDrives/MKxx33GSGSeries

A 1.8" toshiba hard drive, you can get them up to about 320gig, there a bit more expensive but after some measurements this will fit perfectly.

My sandpaper!

Would anyone know where i can get dimensions of the chipset cooler on the zotac motherboard? ive looked everywhere!!

f8l_0e
08-22-2010, 10:42 AM
If you do go with the 1.8" drive, I suggest that you copy the ROM images to a RAM drive before running them and force the HDD to sleep. 1.8" drives are really only designed for mp3 players like the iPod and aren't typically supposed to be spinning/accessing all the time.

--EDIT--

Never mind, I should have read the specs on the link you provided first. This must be a new breed of 1.8" drives.

dcattena
08-22-2010, 07:15 PM
Yeah i know thats what i thought too that these were just replacements for ipods but these new toshiba ones just came out 5400rpm sata connections pretty neat :) i cant think of anything else small as this tho for data storage /os because of the amount of space. If i can get the size of that chipset cooler on the motherboard it would be a great help!

I realy can't wait to see the finished product. It was a sad day when my old N64 finally gave out. I don't suppose you have the guts to your case do you? lol

dcattena
08-22-2010, 10:32 PM
@ryguy No i dont sorry i really need the guts to one tho, not working of course :) because i need the connector plugs for the controllers, if anyone can offer some :) Ive seen some motherboards for sale on some websites for about 20 bucks which is alrite.

Ryguy could u maybe send me your motherboard or at least the grey connector plugs? would be a awesome help :D cheers

dcattena
08-28-2010, 02:58 AM
hey yeah im not sure how thick the board actually is my mockup is about 2.5mm thick, would you know what the standard thickness would be?

dcattena
08-28-2010, 03:01 AM
I read somewhere its about 1.577mm thick i think which is actually even better for the space i currently have.

Trace
08-28-2010, 03:06 AM
I mean if you include standoffs (or anyway you are mounting it)

Just checking :P

dcattena
08-28-2010, 12:16 PM
I cant use stand-offs ill have no room im planning to screw and bolt each section down, maybe a thin piece of foam for the soldier joints under the board. Itl be a tough one.

Diamon
08-28-2010, 01:24 PM
Airflow and cooling seems to be an issue with the design. If you mount the mobo directly on the base air could get trapped there and reach very high temperatures. Maybe you could get a more low-profile cpu cooler?

dcattena
08-28-2010, 07:51 PM
Thats the lowest profile i could find that will cool a core 2 duo. The cpu fan is in a good place to get air i might need to try and work out a exaust fan. I want to keep it looking as orignal as possible.

Ok its been ages and this project is goin pretty slowly but i got the cpu cooler today so i can power it up now with a spare psu i have. Works very well, the cooler is ridiculously short....not short enough tho ill have to trim a bit off the top half to get the case closed up again. Im thinking of installing a operating system on a usb and boot off that, or else i might just have a separate drive plugged into the usb which will have everything on it, i dont mind the hdd being outside the case. Heres some pics of the testing and setup hopefully ill get the psu soon and close it all up :D

Just a quick one, ive decided on a storage solution. Im going to have 2 x 32Gb USB flash drives inside a game cartridge which is then attached in the slot.
1 USB is for the operating system which ive decided will be Ubuntu :D and second is media / roms which can be removable so i can update the data on it.

Psu is coming soon i hope :) other than that theres nothing else really happening.

Also I would like to start a vote for which game should be in the cartridge slot for the final product.
This has to be well known and a great game all round. Just post what you think it should be and ill decide in a few days :)

+1 GoldenEye

I can't tell you how many times I'd just replay the intro level to see how far away I could snipe the garrisons on the dam.

Rare kind of pissed me off when they sold themselves to Microsoft Game Studios, which is why we won't be seeing the N64 versions of Killer Instinct, GoldenEye, Donkey Kong Country, or Banjo Kazooie on the Wii Virtual Console any time soon.

polvorito
10-12-2010, 09:29 AM
actually I was lucky... :) I found an old radio in my garage and took a push button
http://nsm04.casimages.com/img/2010/10/08//mini_1010081222571176896887512.jpg (http://www.casimages.com/img.php?i=1010081222571176896887512.jpg)
and 3 way switch
http://nsm04.casimages.com/img/2010/10/08//mini_1010081222571176896887511.jpg (http://www.casimages.com/img.php?i=1010081222571176896887511.jpg)

They where so small that I though it could fit in
Maybe you can find something similar in an electronic shop, maybe on ebay, if you look for "micro switch " or try to find some in an old case, maybe an old keyboard?

I cut the original buttons, filled the with them mastic to add holes for retaining
http://nsm04.casimages.com/img/2010/10/08//mini_1010081222571176896887510.jpg (http://www.casimages.com/img.php?i=1010081222571176896887510.jpg)

mounted looks like that
http://nsm04.casimages.com/img/2010/10/08//mini_1010081222571176896887515.jpg (http://www.casimages.com/img.php?i=1010081222571176896887515.jpg)
http://nsm04.casimages.com/img/2010/10/08//mini_1010081222571176896887513.jpg (http://www.casimages.com/img.php?i=1010081222571176896887513.jpg)

the screws are only for retaining the buttons from lifting off
and the plastic construction is made with super glue ( I used a lot of that)

The buttons are about 7mm height

I know is a tricky part, the ram being just under...

I have to go now, but I'll have a look on ebay this evening to see if I find something that could do it for you
c u later

dcattena
I made a quick search on ebay: if you look for "push button switch pcb" you can find many switches like the one I've used for the reset button,
if you look for "1 way switch pcb" you get the one for the power button
this stuff is very cheap (like Qty 25 for 7 AU$) and comes from taiwan.

I was using the 1 way switch for power, it works but is not really appropriate for a pc mobo, in common PCs the power is a push button so I've changed using the reset button as power

The power button is working but I haven't connected anything on it. Maybe I'll just stick a resistance on it and use it to have two speed...?

dcattena
10-12-2010, 07:44 PM
Im still thinking the best way is to have the power switch graze past the top of a momentary switch as you push it to on position.

polvorito
10-13-2010, 02:18 AM
the thing with that kind of switch is that when you put it on the ON position and leave it there, the system goes off after 3 seconds. To avoid going off you need to put it on the ON position and just after put it back to the OFF position manually.
Maybe adding a spring can do the trick...

billygoat333
10-13-2010, 02:49 AM
or... I think he is saying just as you are moving the switch to on, it brushes the momentary switch to connect then disconnects as the button travels to on. could work with a copper contact... you could def. make your own.

My Dell lappy's power switch was just a bunch of wires and a copper plate that when you pressed on, the wires hit the copper plate and completed the circuit. (it was a bit more complicated than that, but you get the gist)

Also ive removed the 40mm fan, it was ridiculously loud and running temperatures are still about 55-60 degrees which is great.

Put the power button in, how it works is there is a mom / off / mom switch underneath. As you slide upwards it turns on, and then flicks itself back to the center. If you flick it down it will reset.

How are the temperatures turning out with the cartridge as compared to polvitos mod where he used a grate instead?

dcattena

Well i always wanted a cartridge there i havnt got any final numbers yet without a operating system but it was idling for about 2 hours and it wasnt very hot at all and the 40mm was drawing out hot air aswell so it seemed to be working. Mine will always be hotter as its running a core2 duo compared to the atom in polvitos.

dcattena
12-27-2010, 07:34 AM
Yes thats exactly what i want to do! Im thinking a LED screen since there thinner, and ive found all the parts that will fit including psu! Just cost is the drawback for me

StormRider
12-29-2010, 09:49 PM
Great minds think alike, I see :D
I see a few things wrong with that set-up. first, that PSU has no way to be plugged in unless you use a power cable extender or build your own, not to mention a metal retainer of some kind for the psu to keep it from coming loose and crushing some other parts. you should probably put it next to the outside of the case to help solve both problems.
second, the graphics cards are drawing air through the metal(I assume it's metal) dividing wall between the screen components and the computer, so they'll overheat like crazy. to fix that, flip them the other way around. also, there are at least two more problems with that arrangement. first, you will probably need either a pci riser card or extender cable to plug them in. second, if you want to use them in crossfire together, they'll have to be very, very close to each other, probably on the same side.
oh, and don't forget room for any fans/watercoling/wire management/other parts you plan to put in it. like a cd drive, for example, unless you plan on going external

dcattena
12-30-2010, 08:57 AM
Everything would be bolted down and yeah the images on the graphics cards are wrong but i didnt have any other pics lol and they would be attached with a pci extender cable hence them being able to be on either side. But thanks for the thoughts it was just a lil brain wave thing i had. Would be very awesome if it worked :)

Sorry for the delays again.

:) No worries, I & I'm sure every other modder knows very well how it can be waiting for special needed bits :D, so it's back to progression cool :).

is it going to matter to the SATA drive that it's missing the 3.3V (orange) line?

NightrainSrt4
02-04-2011, 01:17 PM
It shouldn't for most drives. The 3.3v line was added for compatibility reasons IIRC. Most drives don't use it, so it shouldn't be a problem in this case.

Interesting fact I didn't know about .

dcattena

Im not 100% sure about that i dont think the drive needs it but ill check some specification sheets and see. Hrm ok the drive actually needs 3.3v to run and nothing else. I dont think my power supply has a 3.3v line :( Some wiring needs to take place here, is there anywhere where i can get the line?

dcattena
02-04-2011, 07:33 PM
Ok i might have to steal a 3.3v off the 24pin atx plug, thats the only place i can see right now. This is gonna be risky :D

No 5v-3.3v resistor?

No 5v-3.3v resistor?

That's exactly how my adapters with 3.3V do the conversion. Or if you want less power loss, you could use a TI switching regulator. TI will send you one for free; just let me know if you're interested, and I'll get you the link.

Ill see what the adapter can do tomorrow when i get it, hoping it has a resistor built into it, or else ill go with a resistor along the line, thanks AmEv.
Thanks for the suggestion nevermind ill see how it goes and ill pm you if it doesn't work out.

Hey everyone, i got some good news and some bad news. Good news is i have finnaly installed the hdd today and everything is closed up fine. Ive just finished installing windows 7 and works like a charm, pictures will be up soon. Down side....i was powering the drive from my desktop as the power from the pico-psu was not sufficiantly powering the hard drive. It would spin up, then die, then try and spin up again and just die. Plus the micro sata to sata adapter was getting VERY hot. Ive come to the conclusion that the 3.3v from the atx plug i stole isnt sufficiantly supplying the corrent power. Im now figuring out how to get 3.3 from the 5v supply i have seperatly.

So far im thinking a zener diode in series with some more diodes or with another resister to get the correct voltage drop over them.

Any help would be grateful :)

So close to the end everyone. Thanks for all your help.

Cheers

Just ordered a new adapter that will convert the dedicated 5v line i have to 3.3v so i can use it for the micro sata power. about 10 - 15 working days :( then everything will be done. Stay tuned for some pictures.

Just finished some testing, graphics card is running about about 59 degrees while cpu is still a nice and cool 35. Heres some pictures of the test setup with a few mates, the hard drive is powered from a desktop power supply for now.

All controllers have been mapped, and the pc can handle the full hd output very well.

Hey everyone, i know you've been waiting for this post for quite a while. Its finally finished! :D its been a pretty stressful 7 or so months but the N64 HD is up and running ready to play all your favourites. From Goldeneye to Battletoads Double Dragon :)

I'd like to thank everyone for all the support along the way i cant thank you enough, you've kept this project alive to the end.

The hard drive was probably the biggest set back but after alot of trail and error i found that the sufficient power was from another port on the pico psu. I know it sounds simple enough but it was quite annoying to work out. I found this out after using a old xbox 360 power supply, after the hdd still failed with this power, i came to the conclusion that it was something else. The port is was previously using was labeled HDD, which is why i would assume it would be the correct port, but for some reason it wasn't....but hey it works in the end.

All there is to do now is maybe some cleanup of the inside and just finalizing some software configurations.

Now heres some pictures you've all been waiting for :) There will be a video posted up later of some game intros running on the system :)

Xbox wire stripped for some 12v lines :)

Just installed Team Fortress 2 for a lan i got coming up, actually runs pretty well. Graphics card got to a nice 68 degrees :)

All the software has been setup so it now runs a media center, and all emulators from Nes to Sega genesis. All with just the controller input only, no keyboard mouse.

A few more pc games have been installed and configured for the controllers, eg: flatout 2 and Trackmania :)

Ill try and get some videos and pictures up if you like.

Thanks.

Question:

Would flipping the GPU fan make any temp change?

dcattena
04-06-2011, 01:05 AM
Well i initially had it blowing onto the heatsink which bumped the temp up to a nice 95degrees :) its flipped now and under game stress 68 is pretty good. Idle is about 40-50 ish.
