Well, I called Cox to cancel the premium channel trial they gave us for a year so she kindly set it to cancel on it's expiration date.
She mentioned a price freeze option that would make sure they can not raise the price of service for 2 years but it could go down if it got cheaper. On top of that, it takes off 15 dollars a month. The catch is, if you cancel anything within a year you pay a fee of 48 dollars... but it goes down 2 dollars per month you stay with them.
Well, since we were saving 15 dollars I asked about their best internet package and it just so happens it was +15 dollars.

Not as great as some others on this site but I'm more than happy. My only issue is the ping but I have a feeling that's thanks to wireless and old coax under the house AND being run through a splitter that goes to the DVR.
I thought I may have better luck with another router since I have 3 or 4 of them laying around here. I plugged one in and my speed test came out to like...4mbps dl and 5.5mbps upload... wtf?

You don't know slow internet or 'high' pings :P

Well, my ping at my local San Diego hub is upwards of 75-80 but ya, I'm not exactly complaining, just curious why it's running like that. I'm no network guru to say the least so It's all fairly greek to me.

lol, I know not everyone has crazy fast internet but I've seen some insane speedtest results here. Like in the 100's. Hopefully I didn't offend anyone bitching about my internet speeds.
Now suddenly it's jumping around and I'm hitting like 6mbps dl. I know it's not terrible but considering it's supposed to be 20+ it's kind of pissing me off.

It is neat to see "As a free user, your bandwidth is capped to 500 KB/s" and think "yep, sure, I'm lucky to hit two-fifths of that".

Well, my internet was down for ~10 hours yesterday and 3 hours or so today. Cox came out and the tech unplugged the router which was connected at the time and plugged it back in after testing the line and sure enough... wouldn't reconnect. He fiddled around for hours until finally running a huge line straight from the pole to a test router he got out of his truck. Still no connection. :)
I'm currently connecting fine but my speeds are about 1/5 of what they should be and if I reset my modem right now it probably wouldn't come back for a few hours.
Hopefully they fix the problem tomorrow.

had this happen when a squirrel decided that the insulation on the cable line was tasty and ate away a good 3-5 ft section of it, leaving the bare wires to be interfered with at nature's whim. lol quite entertaining to see the section of wire that was all chewed up. The tech said it was the worst he'd seen.

I think I left out the part about someone from the city coming out to fix the pole since cox isn't responsible for that. The cox tech scheduled it and they were supposed to be here that day or the next... never came.
We also had a notice on our answering machine saying power would be out from 11pm until ~8am friday night through saturday morning. Our power never went out so if they actually fixed something I have no idea... this was scheduled before cox had come out though so I'm not sure if the problems were related. As of now my speeds are in the low 20's and my gf's watching netflix on another computer so... *knock of ikea wood*

While the cable guy was here I had his connect the line in my room. I decided to move the router and modem to my room and run directly to the router. Speeds definitely increased!
