I'm trying to connect to the internet but getting this error.

"Network controller driver"
error occurred during installation,
"The name is already in use as either a server name or a server display name"

its the driver for the network controller. i also went to the device manager and it shows not an ? but ! next to my network controller. i right clicked and chose "update driver" and told it to look in the asus mobo cd, and it also gave me the same error message "the name is already in use as either a service name or a service display name". The first time i installed all the drivers from the cd it didnt install that one either, and gave the same error message.

for some reason it's listed as "Network Controller #2" but i cant find number one anywhere. I tried deleting it and scanning for it again, and now it comes up as "Network Controller #3".

Thanks for your help.

Firstly, what OS are you running? Assuming it's windows of some kind, is there a cable plugged in to the card? It soulds like it may be working, but there's another computer with the same name on the network. Unplugging it will remove that possibility.

I think we need a little more info about your setup.
like OS, are you using DSL? any routers or switches?
you said it occured durring instalation. of what? hardware or is this a new install of the O/S?

Did you try to change the name of your machine?
IF its xp look in the system properties the name there might already be on another machine

How many NICs are in your machine?
My machine has a server M/B with two NICs try disabling one of them rather than removing it.

Sorry i wasnt clear. the problem is not a network problem, but it's a hardware/driver issue. Im using XP SP2. Just put a new mobo (ASUS A8N-SLI) in and ive been able to install all the drivers but the one for the network controller. In device manager it shows an '!' in front of the device. when i install the driver it gives that error message.

Thanks

Well I just whent here Microsoft KnowledgeBase (http://search.support.microsoft.com/search/?adv=1) and entered:
"The name is already in use as either a server name or a server display name"
for both XP and SP2 its either not a MS generated error or thats not the exact error message.

But try this.
go into dev mgr.
bring up the properties for the item with the (!).
click the driver tab.
select 'driver details..." (you should get the name of the existing driver)
Go find this file and rename it.
- I usually just change the extension (use you initials if they are not common extension - makes it easy to find later)
- You may have to boot into safe mode (w/o network support) to rename it.

other things to try are the "update driver" and the "rollback driver" options.
I doubt update will work since connecting to the net is the problem.
Rollback might work by pulling an older copy from a save point.

the nic is on the M/B so you may have to check jumper settings or call Asus
