I've seen it done, but how? Do they just pop off? Is there a hidden screw or snap ring or something somewhere? Do they all come apart or only certain ones?

If you peel off the sticker there should be a rubber plug there. Pull the plug off and you'll be looking at the shaft the blade spins on. There is a plastic washer that rides in a groove on the shaft, it's split on the side. Pry it off gently and the fan should slide right off.

that worked for my PSU fan. However, one of my NZXT fans was solid on the back. it turns out with tha one (after I broke one) that if you put a side load on the blade assembly it'll pop out, then you just pop it back in when you're done
