About to start my first mod...

Hello!

I've been a Dell guy for the past few years, I found the ease of just clicking some buttons and getting a working computer to my satisfaction. I recently decided to not only buy a new computer, but to build it myself. After refamiliarizing myself with the newest bells and whistles I started digging deeper and deeper until I was obsessed with not only building a new computer, but modding the case as well.

I dont need liquid cooled, I dont need a pretty case...but the artist in me is really nagging at me. So anyways, I'm more of a drawer than a sculptor and am confident in my ability to....pretty things up I guess, but not necessarilly fabricate/build things. So I'm aiming for more of engraving/cutting with some basic rebuilding on the inside of the case. My job has me working with piping/tubing on a daily basis, so I dont think the making of the liquid cooling is a big issue...

Anyways, I'm hoping to get some recommendations on a case to use. I'm leaning towards a full tower cause theres just so much more room to work with. I really like the Lian Li 2000 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811112074) because of the preseperated thing its got going on and how the mobo sits higher...but of course its expensive...and I dont know if I want to go destroying a $250 piece of computer case for the fun of it. I've looked all through newegg and some other sites looking for an inside design thats similar but with no luck. I have a theme/color/general design idea already in my head, just have to transfer it to paper.

So any recommendations would be appreciated.

I would buy a cheaper case and mod it first, though none are quit like the Lian Li. It will let you try your hand and modding and get better with your tools. Then you can either buy the Lian Li and mod it or if you really dislike modding (or suck @ it) you can buy the nice new shiny Lian Li and stuff you parts into it. There nice cases and look good to most unmoded.

I'm currently searching the area for a junk/trash case to practice my dremeling abilities on. I'll let you know what I find :D

Rosewill makes some good cheap junk cases. You can find them on newegg.

i didnt feel like ordering anything and waitinf for shipping or whatever.

I searched local places with no luck so i just picked up a coupld 18x8" sheets of aluminum to hack up a bit for practice. I may even be able to use them for some other stuff if my skills prove to be fruitful



Now then, I couldnt find any metal blades for a scroll saw and i asked the guy at home depot about it. he said scroll saws no good for metal and i'd be better off with a band saw. the band saw really would be a pain in the ass it seems for what im trying to do and he said i could maybe use some of the high teeth per inch blades on the scroll saw....any inputs from you guys?

i just picked up the jigsaw attachment for my dremel and some high speed cutters....i was hoping to use the scroll saw cause it looks like you can get some really intricate details with the thing.....ill start hacking away and see what i can do :D
