My first project, modding an HP Pavillion PC

Hello everyone, first of all, thank you for visiting my Worklog. So Let's begin, this is my first Worklog and PC modding, this project was inspired from an event named Campus Party was taken place here in Mexico in 2010. I decided to do some modding to my old Desktop PC, an HP Pavillion, the idea is to use this PC like a media server to store videos, music and photos so I can access them in any moment from anywhere in my house. I hope you like this worklog and all comments are welcome, once again thank you for visiting my Worklog. Finally this computer will be taken to the next Campus Party in 2011.

Hola a todos, primeramente les doy las gracias por visitar mi diario de trabajo(Worklog). Este es mi primer diario de trabajo y a su vez la primera modificacion que hare a mi computadora, este proyecto fue inspirado de un evento que se llama Campus Party que se llevo acabo en Mexico en 2010. Decidi hacer algunas actualizaciones y cambios a mi antigua PC de escritorio, la idea es utilizarla como servidor de medios para almacenar videos, musica y fotos de tal forma que los pueda accesar en cualquier momento y de cualquier parte de la casa. espero que les guste este diario de trabajo y una vez mas les doy las gracias por visitarme aqui. Por ultimo cabe mencionar que esta sera la computadora que llevare el Campus Party 2011 :D.

Welcome to TBCS, Dash. That's a good solid chassis, I'm interested to see what your plans are for it.

Looks like a good case to start with. I always like projects based off an OEM case.

What are your plans for the project? Case looks like it has ton's of room to work with. In my opinion that back panel is begging for the fan grill to be cut larger and a 120mm (or larger) fan to be mounted up there.

This could be interesting, got almost the same case lying around here and begging for a mod.
I my opinion these cases has some good potential.

In the first part of the project the idea is to place two 120mm fans in front of the case by modifying the metal chasis, and the two plastic pieces that conform the front panel.

La primera fase del proyecto consiste en modificar el panel frontal del gabinete para poder colocar dos ventiladores de 120mm.

This is one of my tools that I use to cut through metal and plastic.

Here I show the first piece of the front panel before I cut it, to make room for the two fans.

This is the result after the cuts and sanding had been made.
Depues de realizar el corte y darle una lijada, este es el resultado.

Here you can see the two fans enter perfectly between the cuts I made.
Aqui compruebo que los ventiladores entran en el espacio en donde hice los cortes.

Then I made two circular holes on the second piece of the front panel, first I draw two circles using a template from here http://www.mnpctech.com/Fan_Grill_Templates.html, later I used the dremel to make the cuts.
Lo que que hice despues fue cortar la segunda pieza del panel frontal, para trazar los circulos me ayude con unas plantillas que baje del siguiente enlace http://www.mnpctech.com/Fan_Grill_Templates.html.

Now I need to complete the missing part of the front panel, I used a piece of acrylic, once i cut and glued to the front panel the result is shown as follow:
Ahora necesito completar la parte faltante del panel frontal, para eso utilize un pedazo de acrilico transparente, una vez cortado y pegado queda como se muestra a continuación:

Finally I decided to use some PVC tubes I had arround, so I cut them into two pieces, in the next image I show you how are going to be placed on the front panel:
Para terminar decidi usar tuvo de PVC para darle una mejor vista a los ventiladores por lo tanto recorte un tuvo de PVC de 10mm de diametro (fue el mas grande que encontre) y en la siguiente imagen se muestran los tubos de pvc colocados en el panel frontal del gabinete:

Hello again, firstly i want to thank all of you for your comments. In this second update I'll go with the metal case, so let's start.

The first thing I wanna do is to make a couple of cuttings on the front of the metal case, later on I'll make two circular cuts on the superior and posterior parts of the case, one for a 120mm fan and other for the PSU fan, in the next pictures you can apreciate where I'll be doing the cuttings.

Lo primero que hare es hacer un par de cortes en el frente del gabiente, para despues realizar dos cortes circulares en la para superior y posterior del gabinente que por cierto aqui es en donde pienso colocar otro ventilador de 120mm :D, en la siguientes fotos se puede apreciar los trazos en donde hare los cortes para los ventiladores frontales, el ventilador de la parte posterior y el orificio superior que permitirar una mejor ventilacion de la PSU(Fuente de Poder).

After struggling a bit making circular cuts and after some grinding, I think the results are quite satisfactory, here I show some photos of the case.

Despues de batallar un poco haciendo los cortes circulares y de haber lijado un poco los resultados obtenidos creo son bastante satisfactorios, aqui les muestro unas fotos del gabinete.

This part will be where I'm going to put the 120mm fan with a custom grill.

In the next photo you can see a cut, the purpose for that cutting was to allow air to pass freely into the PSU, the reason for this was that I had to change the original PSU for other with more power, the original PSU when is installed on the chassis has the fan placed at the bottom and when I installed the new PSU, the fan was left on the top part of the PSU :S, so that's why i made that cut.

El proposito de este corte es permitir que el aire pase libremente hacia la fuente de poder, la razon de esto fue que tuve que cambiar la fuente original por otra de mas potencia (la fuente original tiene el ventilador colocado en la parte inferior a diferencia de la mayoria de las fuentes :S), todo esto es para poder soportar los ventiladores que llevara el gabienete entre otras cosas que pienso ponerle mas adelante.

After all the cuts I made, this is what was left of the cutting disc, by the way, I only used one disc through the whole working process :D

Nice work on the fan holes. If you take a hand file to those edges, you can get them nice and smooth (no need for the U-channel that a lot of people are fond of).

+1, As I work in a machine shop I've got to say a properly filed edge is definitely the best, looks good and you won't cut yourself. Get a rounded file for getting inside those fan holes.

Hi again, here we are with a brand new update, so let's begin.

Aqui estamos nuevamente, con una nueva actualización, en donde mostrare los resultados obtenidos despues de usar bondo en el panel frontal.

"Bondo" para los que no lo conocen es una pasta para rellenar huecos o abolladuras que se usa generalmente en los autos, pero otro uso que se la da es precisamente aqui en el modding, se usa para moldear y dar forma a objetos en mi caso sera para dar forma a los dos orificios que tendra el panel frontal.

This is what you are waiting for :D, after a lot layers of bondo applied to the frontal panel and a lot of sanding, just to make the surface very smooth, here are my results.

This is all for this update, I'll wait till the bondo dry, so I can apply one last layer of bondo and then go on with the case.
Finally I'm thinking on what color schemem that I would like to use on the case,
the one I like most consist on mostly black with some details in red, that's for the exterior, and for the interior, it could be red with some details in black. All comments are welcome. See you on the next update.

Es todo por el momento, esperare a que seque el bondo para aplicar una ultima capa, y continuare con el gabiente, por ultimo estoy pensando en el esquema de color que usare para pintar el gabinete, uno de los que me esta gustando es usar color negro con detalles en rojo para el exterior y en el interior rojo y detalles en negro. Hi again, in this new update, I'll show you the last cuts that I'm going to make to the case before I start painting and I'll show the structure that will hold the two fans on the frontal panel, so let's get started.

Aqui de nuevo para mostrarles un avance mas. Continuare con el gabinete, y les mostrare los ultimos cortes que hare sobre el, y despues les enseñare la estrucutra que sostendra los dos ventiladores que estaran colocados en el panel frontal. Asi que comencemos.

Here you can see some pictures with the last cuts that will allow all the cables from the PSU to pass behind the back of the case, so I can do a better cable managment.
