I did just say in another thread that I haven't had the time to work on my mod, but this is different. At the Micro Center where I work, we usually have a computer with great specs on display for the customers to check out and enjoy. At the moment we have nothing on display, but the manager wants us to throw something together. He also wants it to be "different", so I'm doing a custom Cobra GT500 theme case with the dual white stripes going up the front and across the top. I will be painting everything else flat black.

I chose the Coolermaster 690 since it's a case that we sell and it's not all that pricey. The employee cost was $50.

Oh, and I plan on finishing within two weeks!

Here's the case on Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119137)

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060579.jpg

Here's the inside top panel. It's ugly and will be modded as well

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060582.jpg

The inputs have been removed as I prep for painting

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060583.jpg

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060584.jpg

The whole interior will be flat black. There's a lot of painting left to do once I get some more!

This is the goofy pattern on the inside top and front

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060588.jpg

I used a wire cutter to remove the pattern and then a sanding block on my dremel to smooth out the edges

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060589.jpg

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060590.jpg

Then I taped up the top for painting

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060591.jpg

And added a few coats of flat white paint

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060600.jpg

Three hours later the tape came off

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060601.jpg

Next, I removed the filters from the front bay covers so when I paint on the other side it doesn't leak through

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060597.jpg

And I peeled off the Coolermaster logo on the front

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060598.jpg

The front is then taped off too

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060599.jpg

I also taped off the side panel where I'll cut the window

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060609.jpg

Looks nice so far. Removing the plastic inside the screen is a definite improvement, and it should improve air flow.

Not here.

I put the inputs back into the top panel

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060610.jpg

And then reconnected the painted panels on the case

Oh, and I know the black stipe isn't perfect. I'll be adding some pinstriping to it so it stands out more.

Now that the paint is dry within the case I put the bay clips and screws back in

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060617.jpg

The backplates are getting painted too.

I got the cobra logo! Once I touch up the pinstriping I'll add it

I got an actual Cobra logo from Ford

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060633.jpg

The lettering is 2" and applying it is easy

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060619.jpg

This is the same striping used for cars

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060620.jpg

I carefully cut more than enough to mold

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060621.jpg

I was happy to get a flat edge with the striping

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060622.jpg

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060624.jpg

Now comes the big one. I had to cut it from 6" to 2"

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060626.jpg

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060627.jpg

We're nearing the end

Oh the wonders you'll see. . . . . . . . :D

TheGreatSatan

I taped off the side panel where I want to put the window and then clamped a ruler along its edge to keep my dremel on the right path

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060634.jpg

And it only takes about 10 minutes

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060635.jpg

Then I grab a large piece of plexi to size up

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060636.jpg

Once the window edges are filed down and the holes for the rivets are drilled, I add a coat of paint

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060641.jpg

While the paint dries I go back to the other panel and use an epoxy to add an automobile filter that will later be used in conjunction with an intake fan

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060640.jpg

Now that the paint is dry I can add the window I cut with rivets and these little pieces of metal I cut from the old side panel

They'll take the pressure from the rivets off of the glass to prevent it from cracking

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060642.jpg

I still have to be careful putting them in because I could easily scratch the glass or damage the paint

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060643.jpg

Here's where I'm at right now

So, I've been thinking that plain old thumbscrews weren't going to be good enough this time

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060659.jpg

Then I found that they actually sell cool cobra tire valve caps. I'm going to make my own thumbscrews!

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060660.jpg

I just have to add a little QuickSteel and a regular case screw

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060662.jpg

Now I just have to let them dry

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1060663.jpg

For the most part, the store will supply the inyards, but in this case I had to supply the fan for the rear of the motherboard/processor. I needed it to be a thin 15mm fan to fit behind the right panel and it had to light up to make good use of the air filter on the side of the case.

It lights up the filter very nicely

Even in complete darkness

Looks great, but question. Are they planning to sell this model? or is it just for show? If they sell it are you going to see a cut for it? Just curious.

The air filter is kick ass.

Are you going to put a top on it like a car would have or just leave it open?

TheGreatSatan
11-10-2010, 09:10 AM
It's currently all mesh on top, so I will leave it open with a single 140mm white LED fan

As far as I know it'll be just a show-off display, but it might sell. At the moment I'm not worried about making money off of it, just a good rep from the company as their mod-man

gorgeous! nice job! say....you should stick it on an RC chassis and drive it around the store. Have it chase down particularly irritating customers. :D
